About the Author

Dr. Peggy Kruger Tietz is a licensed psychologist and social worker. She currently resides in Austin, Texas and has a private practice there. Prior to her move to Austin, Dr. Tietz had a private practice in Philadelphia, seeing couples, families and individuals, for over 30 years. Before developing her private practice she worked with children in multiple settings, such as family service agencies and foster care. She has trained and taught at the Family Institute of Philadelphia. Her Ph.D. is in developmental psychology from Bryn Mawr College. She has advanced training in Play Therapy and is a certified practitioner of EMDR ( eye movement desensitivation and reprocessing) Dr. Tietz sees a wide range of children, with normal developmental problems as well as those who have experienced trauma. She has conducted workshops on parenting, sibling relations and emotional literacy.

For Kid's and Adult Kids

A wonderful and delightful tool for parents and the inner child who needs re-parenting. This is a book that has helped me identify and understand my grown-up feelings. I was raised by parents to be "seen and not heard", (they were raised to "sit down and shut up"), so not a lot of experience with emotional knowledge. "Acting as if", and "rising above them" were the most likely tools offered. This little book helps jump start a generational lack of experience and gives hope for breaking that cycle. Thank you!

This author is amazing!

Just ordered 2 of these books! One for me, and one for my sister who has an 8 year old, and. 3 year old. The author of this book is SO great! It is very difficult as a parent these days! The world is full of incredible stimulation, and our children don't know how to cope with this in a healthy way. This book helps to teach this, and it is amazing! Get you one now! This is my new go to gift for all my Mommy friends!!!

Dr. Peggy Kruger Tietz does a kick butt job in the quest of explaining the murky world of feelings.

Being the mother of a preschooler and a licensed social worker with at risk children, I'm pretty darn familiar with pouting, crying, and shouting. I even do them myself! One of the hardest things to learn as a human (at any age, honestly) is your emotions and your personal reaction to them. What the heck do they mean? Why do we have them?!

Dr. Peggy Kruger Tietz does a kick butt job in the quest of explaining the murky world of feelings. She starts with a fun little one page rhythm to introduce the book. The following every day emotions are explained: anger, fear, shame, sadness, happiness, love, disgust, surprise. Each emotion has a color assigned to it and a scenario children face everyday. A bubble of example actions following the feeling is given, then the author asks the question of how the reader acts out that particular feeling. To wrap up, she gives three very clear explanations of the feeling, a minor example, and how the feeling can help to accomplish something.

I'm so very much looking forward to sharing this book with my son as he grows and learns this lifelong toughie. With my work kiddos, I hope this will be a critical resource to discuss their emotions and some self discovery.

Yell and Shout, Cry and Pout: A Kid's Guide to Feelings

Anger, fear, shame, sadness, happiness, love, disgust and surprise are the topics tackled in Peggy's book Yell and Shout, Cry and Pout. Each title asks the reader a question revolving around the feeling being discussed such as What do we do when we are angry?, or How do you know when you feel ashamed? On each page you find huge circles that have descriptive words that describe the feeling being addressed. On the opposite page you get some great examples about how those feelings look in application.

This book really helps you identify your feelings with great examples of situations that might stimulate the feeling talked about. This book is a great tool to use to open up discussions with younger children who are trying to discover the meaning behind their emotional reaction and how to control them and recognize them in others. The best feature in this book, to me, though was at the end of each section it asks the reader What makes YOU feel....., which was a great opener for my kids to talk about how this applies to their life, making the discussions personal and fruitful. My son loved the little poem at the end of the book that nicely tied together what the author wishes to accomplish, recognition and application. I enjoyed reading all the interesting facts about emotions in the back of the book and these made good discussion topics for my older daughter as well. Nice all around book with simply, but helpful illustration that can help any parent in encouraging their kids to talk about and identify their emotions in a confrontational way.

Dr. Tietz's illustrations and descriptions are very helpful for parents, children, teachers, and other professionals. The book helps children identify and understand feelings for which they may have no words. It normalizes all the primary feelings.

Short Book on Emotions That is Tall on Content

Anger, fear, shame, sadness, happiness, love, disgust, and surprise are featured in this short book that is tall on content.

This book has an excellent style that is repeated as the reader delves into each emotion. The emotion is bold text and is followed by a description of what purpose that emotion serves. Example: “Anger tells us when we’ve been mistreated so we can defend ourselves.” Then a short fictional story is told and the emotion the character is feeling is stated. The book then goes on to say how those feelings might make you feel, how we might react, and finally explains some things that could happen to cause you to feel that emotion. Illustrations by Rebecca Layton appear throughout the text so the reader can visualize what emotion is being discussed. The final page is a Note to Adults that includes interesting facts about emotions.

The back cover blurb states: “When children can identify their feelings they gain self-awareness, become better communicators and are able to ask for the help they need.” I truly believe this book will go a long way in helping children and those around them better understand these emotions.

Highly recommended.
