About the Author
I'm a native of rural Minnesota and spent my growing up years in Milan as the youngest of four children raised by my businessman-poultry farmer father and mother. I'm a 1965 graduate of Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD, and a 1969 graduate of Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul, MN. For 37 years I served as a Lutheran (ELCA) pastor in 5 congregations: Zion in Berthold, ND; Salem in Brooklyn, NY; Faith in Staples, MN; Grace in Wenatchee, WA; and Good Shepherd in Olympia, WA. I retired in 2006 and continue to live in Olympia with my wife, Rose Ann, near to our married sons and two granddaughters. Intense curiosity led me to study family history and genealogy, travel widely, and write in an effort to make sense of my origins.

Paul Lundborg writes of his Swedish ancestors and the tragedy that befell them in the 1862 US/Dakota War. The author works from family lore and historical research to fill in the gaps of a story previously lost. Paul brings a 21st century sensitivity and understanding of the issues that created this horrific event. In a surprise encounter, he connects with a descendant of a Dakota man who experienced his own tragedy in the aftermath of this war. Well written. An excellent read.

I ordered this book at the behest of a relative while doing my own family research. I found the book fascinating and actually was written by one of my own distant relatives who had the desire to learn more about his own family history. Way to go Paul.:)

I have thought for along time we take so much of our daily life for granted. This story really paints a clear picture of a tough life for these brave settlers. Thank you for sharing this story a good read for all.

A very interesting accounting of a tragic event in the life of Minnesota pioneers caught in the midst of a tragic war. Being a genealogist I enjoyed the family ties section. I also enjoyed the reminiscence section of Pastor Andrew Jackson.

Arrive ahead of schedule, with no damage. My wife loves the book. She is from North Dakota and loves these kind of books. The author was the Pastor at her church in North Dakota when she was a teenager.

Very interesting narrative about the author's loss of family during the US/Dakota War. Sad rendering of his family losing many innocent people in a Indian attack caused by the US government's own bigoted abuse, failed promises and treaties. The author gives a fair and unbiased history of the events in a loving and forgiving way. Worth the read!
