The Cruelty of Allied Forces in Germany

In the words of American historian and diplomat George Kennan: “The disaster that befell this area with the entry of the Soviet forces has no parallel in modern European experience. There were considerable sections of it where, to judge by all existing evidence, scarcely a man, woman or child of the indigenous population was left alive after the initial passage of Soviet forces … The Russians … swept the native population clean in a manner that has no parallel since the days of the Asiatic hordes.”
Allied decisions for "resettlement" are considered in Chapter Four. Although the 1941 "Atlantic Charter" proclaimed by Roosevelt and Churchill expressly rejected territorial changes that did not meet the desires of the affected people, this did not discourage the British and American leaders from victims of this relatively unknown holocaust have later supporting the forcible mass expulsion of ethnic Germans from Eastern and Central Europe. As early as August 1942, the Allied leaders accepted the principle of forcible expulsion, which they reaffirmed at the Teheran Conference in 1943. At the February 1945 Yalta Conference, Churchill and Roosevelt further agreed to permit Stalin to use Germans as slave labor after the war, a practice that the diplomats dubbed "reparations in kind." An estimated 874.000 German civilians were abducted to Soviet ~ Russia, of whom 45 percent perished in captivity.
The expulsion and deportation of millions of ethnic German civilians from Czecho-Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Romania and Yugoslavia is detailed by the author, who remarks that "hitherto it would seem that the blackout on this period of history had been complete." While the Allied leaders at the Potsdam Conference called for the "orderly" and "humane" resettlement of the hapless Germans, in practice it was anything but.
As de Zayas further points out, mass deportations were designated as "war crimes" and "crimes against humanity" by the Nuremberg Tribunal. But even as the Allied court was sentencing Germany's wartime political and military leaders to death for such acts, millions of Germans were being brutally driven from their homes.
The German Expellees is a well-written, concise introduction to a chapter of what James J. Martin has characterized as "inconvenient history." These horrific events were not haphazard or spontaneous. Rather, this mass "ethnic cleansing" of German civilians was official Allie policy. For too long, the victims of this relatively unknown holocaust have remained largely forgotten and un-mourned.

Total, Incomprehensible Horror

The author does not merely describe the horrifying inhumanity of WWII and its aftermath in Germany, most of that is already beyond the scope of anyone’s worst nightmare; he goes even further by taking the reader into the depths of hellish despair and violence that was Germany during and long after after WW II. An excellent book that will open your eyes to what happened to the Germans, and to humanity itself. Imagine the most horrifying movie you have ever watched, or the scariest incident you have ever experienced, or the worst pain you have ever felt. Such experiences will be like a warm spring breeze against your cheek compared to what lies between these pages. This war had profound consequences that changed the world forever. The utterly hellish violence visited up German civilians changed them and the entire world forever, those with clear eyes and a mind for history can easily see the results of a changed, damaged world even today. This is not meant to be sensational, but I respectfully recommend that prospective readers use caution when reading this book, the horrors described herein are difficult to comprehend and accept...you will be changed forever.

A haunting book...

I would recommend this book to readers of military history, seeking to gain an understanding of what the final months of WWII were like for people in Germany. I have read other good works (The Last Battle, Fall of Berlin), but I was unprepared for the scope and depth of misery and cruelty suffered by the German people, at the hands of all sides of the victors. I have a feeling that this is one of those books that stays with you for a lifetime.

i gave this book 5 stars because it's very informative and revealing of the atrocities that were committed by the Allied powers. The most guilty beast was Eisenhower. He made Hitler look like an innocent little alter boy in comparison. Read it and weep. Also read "Other Losses" that zeroes in even more in the murder and atrocities committed by Eisenhower. He thought he got away with by his clever deceit and falsifying of records. But there is a higher judge and rest assured, Eisenhower is burning in the hottest fires of hell.

There is Much You Do Not Know

A general sampling and compilation of what I have learned from the thousands of autobiographies and accounts I have read these past 50 years. The author imparts in the last chapter of his book the message he wants the reader to remember, after having read this book. For those that still say, "They got exactly what the deserved", along with other derisive and vulgar remarks, "hopefully they had never witnessed a screaming child running like a living torch through a flaming street, never watched as a man drank his own urine to stay alive while a river ran just beyond his prison fence, never heard the animal shrieks of the tortured as their genitals were mutilated or the groans of a bleeding woman begging for a bullet when the line awaiting its turn grew longer -- hopefully they had never seen such things, for only then can one understand how they might parrot over and over and over again the standard refrain, "they got exactly what they deserved" ... and never lose a moment's sleep."
This book didn't touch or shock me as it might some of you, because I have been reading and listening to the accounts portrayed in this book from persons who lived and witnessed these atrocities since I was a boy. What is quoted in my review doesn't begin to scratch the surface of the bestial way that the German populace was treated before, during, and after the second World War. Reading this book may give you a balanced understanding and appreciation for all of those who suffered, even those that "got exactly what they deserved." I pity anyone who continues to feel that way, after having read this book.
