About the Author
John Robison (1739-1805) was a Scottish physicist and mathematician. He was a professor of philosophy at the University of Edinburgh. A member of the Edinburgh Philosophical Society when it received its royal warrant, he was appointed as the first General Secretary to the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Robison invented the siren and also worked with James Watt on an early steam car. Following the French Revolution, Robison became disenchanted with elements of the Enlightenment. He authored Proofs of a Conspiracy in 1797-a polemic accusing Freemasonry of being infiltrated by Weishaupt's Order of the Illuminati. Robison and French priest Abbé Barruel independently developed similar views that the Illuminati had infiltrated Continental Freemasonry, leading to the excesses of the French Revolution. In 1798, the Reverend G. W. Snyder sent Robison's book to George Washington for his thoughts on the subject in which he replied to him in his Letter to the Reverend G. W. Snyder (24 October 1798). Modern conspiracy theorists like Nesta Webster and William Guy Carr believe that Robison's book described what the Illuminati may have started was the template for the subversion of otherwise benign organizations by radical groups through the 19th and 20th centuries. Spiritual Counterfeits Project editor Tal Brooke has compared the views of Proofs of a Conspiracy with those found in Carroll Quigley's Tragedy and Hope (Macmillan, 1966). Brooke suggests that the new world order, which Robison believed Adam Weishaupt (founder of the Illuminati) had in part accomplished through the infiltration of Freemasonry, will now be completed by those holding sway over the international banking system (e.g., by means of the Rothschilds' banks, Federal Reserve, IMF, and World Bank).

This book was written in the late 1700s. It reveals how the Illuminati was begun, how it was exposed and forced underground and went inside the French Free Masons and Scottish Rite where they exist today. The Illuminatists are real. They are organized and well funded. They exist inside every secret society, particularly the Masons. This is not "conspiracy theory," it is an arguable historical fact. John Robinson provides dates, names, quotes, and documents to back up his assertions.

This is the granddaddy of all conspiracy theory books, the very first. It also has the benefit of being both extremely plausible and well-documented. It concerns the Illuminati Order founded in 1776 in Bohemia, a sort of bastard child of The Enlightenment and how it grew even after it was thought to have been destroyed. It did so by attaching itself to certain portions of certain Freemason lodges, growing wildly first in Germany, allying itself with the Prussian king and the royal house of Hesse in Frankfort and then spreading into France where it played a significant role in the French Revolution. It's great secret was secrecy, stealth and mendacity. Much of its organizational genius survived into the twentieth century and was adopted by socialists and communists and New World Order globalists, many of whom have remarkably similar goals and methods; so much so that they may be lineal descendants, if not actual Illuminatis themselves. That's for you to decide. In any event, the author is quite sincere and honest and knowledgable and I see no reason at all to doubt what he has recorded here. It's a very worthwhile book and gives a fine background of a world-shaking movement that appears to still be with us. I recommend it highly, even though many wish to debunk it. One wonders what their motives might be!

This book is most likely a bait of some sort created by the secret organizations. It continually speaks intelligently to no avail, no actual details are given on what goes on besides basic principles that state revelation or hidden detail besides the facts of religious division and constantly talking in circles to create illusions of content to be generated by luring you into no core or valuable information of knowledge. I put 5 stars purposely to let my comment pop up. Satan has deceptive tactics by simulating false useful information by making you think your gaining the upper hand. Jesus is Lord!!!

The Illuminati - Rothschild - beginning in 1776. The Pyramid on the FDR dollar represents their oppression.

This book was written in 1798 and Robison sent a copy to George Washington to warn him about the infection in the Masonic Lodges. The disease is the Illuminati and it thrives today as another tentacle of the secret societies which control world governments, finances, wars and who determine who will be our next incompetent, corrupt and Luciferian leader. This book gives a good history of what would later take the form of International Communism (the French Revolution) and National Socialism (the world today).

Like Albert Pike's encompassing Luciferian Palladium Rite, Freemasonry now needs a Reformed Rite to root out the Luciferian agenda that infiltrated the world's secret societies. This would go a long way in relieving the propagated, growing crises that now threaten the religions, the governments, the peoples of the world.

An in depth, up close, contemporaneous account of the origins of the Illuminati and the influence of such secret organizations on the French Revolution. Robison was a scholar, a Mason and personally acquainted with many of the players in both of those events. Therefore, this is more informative than any mere historical treatment.
Then, why did I give it only four stars? The language is also from that period and more difficult for a reader from the current era to read.

Interesting read about the origins of the Illuminati in Europe and, particularly, in Germany. Describes the secret society as having the goal of abolishing Christianity.

It is important to read this book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 28, 2018Verified Purchase
A well known leading Labour politician recently said in a news interview there is no world conspiracy and if people believe there is one there is no place for them in the party. Having read Robison's "Proofs" I would say society would have to be very careful before it dismissed that particular conspiracy theory. Robison reads as almost matter of fact and the language is archaic which is what you would expect from a 200 + year old text. The full horror of the revolution doesn't come through with Robison but it does more so in Nesta Webster's "World Revolution" and Leon de Poncin's works. Only 3% of victims were aristocrats. Because people got (and still get) hurt it is very important to understand causes to major events from a compassionate viewpoint. The main thing that struck me from Robinson's evidence was its remarkable similarity to Ford's writings in the Dearborn Independent. I understand why journalists and politicians cry away from discussing this in depth but there appears to be a pattern that has formed over the centuries. It's sad that few people today in high office who are paid to pursue decency and democracy make their own in depth study to see why the world keeps going wrong.

A bit daft really but some truth too it lies within

All this really proves is how daft people were back then to think being a freemason was quite something for their own prestige, pure folly boosting silly pride. But liberty equality etc were used no doubt to foment revolutions and remove kings.
