I really enjoyed the perspective that Mr. Roper presents in this book. It is an honest, if somewhat exaggerated, perspective of the different ways in which a division of America would actually happen. It allows for the personalities of different regions (though, like his esteemed friend in the intro said, I disagree 100% with his judgment of the people in Texas), and gives a somewhat more sympathetic presentation of how certain demographics would engage in ruling their regions, while giving other people with dramatically different natures a less than charitable course of action. Of course this aspect definitely helps one remove the book from a place of reality to the world of fiction, which is appreciated, because otherwise it would be extraordinarily depressing to imagine one's nation in such a circumstance. Unlike a lot of the novels in this genre, it manages to present the story on its own merits, with its own agenda versus presenting a self-aggrandizing fantasy that tends toward either the ridiculous or the dishonest. The characters are rich and well-developed, instead of being caricatures, they're believable and more sympathetic than one might expect. I really enjoy the tension and balance of the people bringing forth their new societies; they are genuine in the sense that they have their own issues with nepotism and corruption of any government, fledgling or otherwise. I was honestly pleasantly surprised; so often I'll pick up a book in this vein and put it down because the author is so transparently Mary-Sueing him/herself into a role of utmost heroism. I might actually read it again, probably the highest praise I can offer for most books.
The only drawbacks would be the editing issues that come with a lot of books produced on Kindle, even those that are done by major corporations with professional editing staff.
Overall, a great book for the beginning of a (hopefully) great series.
