The first 30 seconds are critical. “Opening with a story is a tested and proven method for grabbing audience attention and keeping your audience mentally engaged.”
As a rule, TED Talks are limited to 18 minutes. This gives the speaker only enough time to share one main idea. “If my audience was to forget everything else I said, what one single idea or lesson would I want them to remember?”
Karia says that the secret to an “irresistible” story is conflict. “As long as there are two strong, opposing forces that make the outcome of the story uncertain, a story will be gripping. It keeps us engaged. It keeps us curious.”
The author writes about creating a “mental motion picture” for your audience. “Engaging an audience is more than just giving important information… Patricia Fripp, an executive speech coach, says, ‘People don’t remember what you say as much as they remember what they see when you say it.’ Providing descriptions of the five senses “can help your audience to create a mental motion picture of your characters and stories.” How does it look, sound, smell, feel, or taste?
Being specific adds credibility. “Non-specific statements such as ‘the man was tall’ don’t help your audience members picture the characters and the scene in their mind. Saying, ‘He was about 6 foot 5, with ripped muscles’ provides enough detail for your audience to be able to see the characters and the scene.”
Personal stories add authenticity. “When you talk about events that have taken place in your life, you will naturally feel some of the emotions that you felt when those events took place.”
“Positive-message stories are inspiring… “Positive-message stories are stories where the main character managers to overcome the conflict. The character changes for the better as a result of having overcome the conflict. This type of story shows the audience what they should do and leaves them in high spirits.” In contrast, “a negative-message story… teaches the audience what not to do. While the story may be instructive, it is not inspiring. It leaves audiences on an emotional low, which is generally not how you want to end your presentation.”
What do you want your audience to learn from your story? “Between the conflict and the final victory of the character, we have what I refer to as the ‘spark.’ The spark refers to the process, idea or wisdom that allows the character to overcome the conflict. The spark is one of the most valuable parts of the story. It’s the process or the wisdom that audience members can take home with them and use to overcome similar conflicts in the own lives.”
In the wrap-up chapter, the author summarizes 23 tips for a successful presentation. This is a short book. I read it in about an hour.
The book is organized into nine chapters. The first introduces the topic by explaining why stories are so much more effective than other approaches to public speaking. The second chapter is about hooks and conflict. The third chapter is about the twist or element that makes the story interesting—as opposed to a straightforward accounting of events. Chapters four through six are all related in that they deal with providing the sensory and other details necessary to make the story come alive for the audience member. Chapter seven is about the effectiveness of stories with a positive message. Chapter eight steps back and examines the overall flow of the story with key waypoints of consideration. Chapter 9 is a summation of key points. It’s mostly a list of the 23 bullet points that were made throughout the book, each of which is also located at the end of its respective chapter.
I’d recommend this book for anyone preparing for a public speaking engagement. However, I should point out that the price seems to be higher at the moment than when I bought it. I wouldn’t recommend spending a lot on the book because the information is so widely available.
I'm going to tell you a story....
Book arrived from the Lexington KY Amazon Fulfillment Services covered with something I at first thought was snot. I doubt it was but it was the second brand new long awaited book in the same day that I had to clean and sanitize before I could read it.

A TED Talk is limited to 18 minutes, so each speaker only has time to give the audience ONE takeaway message. How can the speaker give a short talk, and inspire his audience to LISTEN to him? The speaker must capture the audience's attention in the first 30 seconds, or else they will be bored.
How do all great TED Talk speakers do this? Read the book. It is all there.
If you are a salesman, or if you are going to give a speech, you must read this book. Not only will you learn what to tell your customer or audience in the first 30 seconds, you will also learn techniques that will help you of how and what to tell them in the next 17 minutes so that they will listen to your story and buy it.

This book is very shallow - even if you have never given a presentation, speech, or talked before, it’s hard to see how you could gain anything of value from these pages. Even if you are after a very high level, superficial, and basic introduction to storytelling (as part of a presentation) there are much, much better books out there.
At best, this is nothing more than a vanity project by someone that is trying hard to come across as an expert without actually being one.
I got this for £1.99 and consider it £1.98 overpriced.

It's very hard to ascertain who any of the people are who have been quoted giving compliments about the book. Not sure how they are supposed to give this any weight -- and on what list was it a phenomenonal best seller?!
It makes me angry that there is guff like this floating around getting in the way of good quality, helpful material. Eurgh.
It's not that this is unhelpful, but it is so, so basic. Anyone who can read already knows this stuff, and it should be a series of blog posts at best. "Chapter" four was about 360 words, including a 52 word quote and an 'in a nutshell' summary of those words.
I'm so annoyed I parted with good money for this!!!

The only thing is we seem to forget about storytelling when it comes to business. We become boring, banal and obsessd with powerpoint. That’s because we haven’t been taught how to structure and deliver our message in a story format.
This book will change that instantly. It’s powerful, punchy and immediately usable. I have read many of the Amazon Best Selling books on storytelling for business and this book absolutely stands out as the best in terms of content, relevance and brevity.
Well done Akash.

I've learned so much in only so little pages. For people who want to learn how to hold a presentation, speak in public or just tell a story perfectly and don't have time to waste reading books of over 500 words, this book is exactly what you need.
An added bonus is that it lead me to some of the most amazing an inspiring TED talks I've ever heard. I highly recommend it!
