Certainly the author is decades ahead of his time. Humanity will eventually adopt the author's principles written in all of his books. Currently, humanity lives in delusion that the system will continue to serve them. We will see massive changes even in the next decade. Don't waste your money on college--buy the author's books and succeed.

A new system of money creation based on beneficial work accomplished - a truly novel idea

How many times have you read a book describing all the problems of the world yet the author has no ideas of how to make things better and usually lamely ends with some message of "hope" based on nothing. That is not true of Charles Hugh Smith who outlines a brilliant plan to create income for beneficial work whether or not it creates a profit. In fact, it doesn't even have to be an employment situation - just a community that will value that effort. His theoretical system would create money as beneficial work is accomplished. This would be a totally different world and in my view a much better one. I hope many people read this book as it could be the real solution that we need. I have been reading Charles Hugh Smith's blog now for several years and this brings together his deep thinking about the economy and all it's social ramifications. An important and fascinating book.

The 3rd Industrial Revolution and it's effects.

Especially insightful is the discussion about why the old system of capital and labor no longer function as we expect in this current system, the third industrial revolution.

Labor and Capital are no longer scarce commodities attracted to the highest bidder. Automation and software are consuming the boring, repetitive tasks of yesteryear. Jobs are becoming scarce. This is indeed a problem we cannot ignore forever. The value of understanding how these problems came to be is the first step on the path to working to solve them. Mr. Smith has laid it out clearly and concisely.

The CLIME system's concept of a labor based currency issued for proof of useful work fascinates me. That is a concept whose time has come and ought to resolve many of the flaws that are built in to our current system of governance and issuing of currency.

The hidden gem (to me) is the CLIME system's encapsulation of increased authority that comes with earning a sterling reputation and reputation penalties for attempting to cheat the system fits human society nicely. The current system does not reward being an individual whose word is his/her bond and that needs to change.

Buy the book, read the book, digest the concepts and you will never be the same.

I had tremendous hopes for this book, as I've enjoyed many of Smith's articles on Of Two Minds, but it's clear that he can't build a bridge from basic plausible ideas to a workable model. I spent 92% of the book desperately hoping for a reasonable description of what a working example might look like. Nothing. Instead, just constant repetition of the underlying premises. Similarly I wanted him to cite studies, real-world examples, anything to help build a case other than his own thought experiments and observations. Just about nothing there either. I also craved some sniff of an idea about how such a system might bootstrap itself through the process of feeding people with the made - up currency. Nothing. I guess everyone in CLIME needs a real job to pay the real bills on top of working their brains out at CLIME.

What finally made me snap was the section about the Largent system and how he says it isn't a currency and therefore is not subject to currency laws, end of story. No mention of what might happen when a government audits someone and find that they didn't pay taxes because their earnings were in fake money. Earnings are earnings and taxes are taxes and a government is going to change the laws to say that Largent ARE money PDQ if they think it'll lead to a reduced tax take. No discussion, just an undergrad level, sovereign-citizen style argument from semantics. Couldn't even finish the book after that.

So, in conclusion: neat ideas, but no real connection to the real world. CHS would have been better served making his imaginary future the setting of a rip-roaring sci-fi story than trying to convince anyone it's a realistic alternative to the problems of income inequality and capital concentration being foisted on us by the neoliberal capitalism model.

This book tells the entire story about how the rich get richer. The solution is crypto currency attached to work which will pay for everyday goods and services. The author's system is very complete and watches out for thief problems which would be handled by a minimal administration. The final objective would be that everyone gets paid and every one has to work to receive their reward. You will have to read the book to get the full details.

Utterly brilliant. Could CHS' "Community Labor Integrated Money Economy" (CLIME) system become the basis of Guy Alperovitz' "Next System Project" to reform or replace capitalism? All of the underlying technologies are in place. Combine CLIME with Open Platform Cooperativism, Open Source Ecology, and Robert David Steele's Open Power Electoral Reform and we may just have the concepts and tools in place to truly make this world a better place.
