Elizabeth Alexander is the author of five previous books of poetry, including American Sublime, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, and two books of essays, including The Black Interior. She is the chair of the African American Studies Department at Yale University.

An Eloquent and Personal Collection of Poems

I was drawn to Ms Alexander's poetry because of a memoir of hers that was published in The New Yorker. This volume, Crave Radiance, did not disappoint. My book is now marked with a lot of little post-it stickers so I can easily find the poems I want to read again. They are eloquent and personal. Many are windows into a culture that I don't inhabit, that I don't know first-hand. But they never ever make me feel unwelcome. She speaks with grace. I think Ms Alexander's students at Yale University are blessed.
