My father was a naval officer stationed at Pearl Harbor and I was a 14 year-old living in Honolulu when the Japanese attacked, so I've had an abiding interest in what has been written about the event.

Of the many books on Pearl Harbor and the battle of Midway that I have read, this is the most honest and thorough of the lot. In addition to the two major events, the book also explores the effect radio intelligence had on later events of the war. That Kimmel and Short were scapegoats for failures in Washington is brought out clearly and convincingly, as is the fact that the vanities and obstructionism of the Turners should have got them court-martialed.

The Best Book About The Lead-up To Pearl Harbor and War

As I read this book, I realized that what happened then is no different than what happens today as far as our intelligence agencies go and that someone will be a scapegoat. I also realized that there are military men who always look out for themselves while making those who actually are the ones who should be recognized out to be something they were not. Kimmel, Smart and Rochefort all took hits to their careers due to brown nosers in Washington doing just that.

As far as this book, it is a must ready by anyone who is into World War II history. It lets you understand what those in Pearl both knew and didn't know and as to why. It gives you an insight into the intelligence game as well as codes and ciphers used during that period and the difficulties in trying to read other people's mail.

I have to salute Rear Admiral Layton as well as the other writers who saw this book through to completion even after his death. Thank you for putting the record straight.

This book is written in stunning and fascinating detail by the man who was the fleet intelligence officer for General Nimitz during the war in the Pacific. So he was indeed right there in the middle of it. It contains codebreaking stories and how cryptography influenced the outcome of many battles. Having been written from the author Edwin Layton's personal notebooks after the relevant topics were declassified. He provides personal and professional information and inside scoop on plans and people involved in both sides of the war. I gained a great appreciation for the unsung heroes who toiled in secret to decode enemy messages. We need folks like them more than ever these days, and I hope they are out there for us, because the US may not have "won" the war if it did not have such intelligence.

Admiral Layton was Captian Layton when I knew him during the Korean War. I had the pleasure of working in his Fleet Intelligence group at CINCPAC. My immediate superior was Cmdr. Ross Hirshfield and my work entailed close relationship with both of these fine officers. I was an enlisted man a petty officer 2nd class Draftsman Illustrator.

This book is an excellent first hand description of what many think but was not entirely true. Amusing,l in some ways, the fighting among the BRASS is enlightening.. My hat is off the Admiral Layton for his detailed description of events and people. I enjoyed working for both of these fine officers and as I suspect both of them are long gone by now.

Very fascinating firsthand knowledge. While Layton had an axe to grind I thought he still did a pretty good job of being objective. Political maneuvering in a large organization is common. Read Inside the Third Reich by Albert Speer. They took political maneuvering into brute force. Those in power in Washington had more finesse. But in the end a number of them protected themselves when they screwed up. They did not take responsibility for their decisions. Some of it may have been based on altruistic reasons, but others were all about self and their desire for power. This book has added a lot of food for thought not only regarding Pearl Harbor, but also for much of the early war year events for both the US and Japanese.

Ed Layton speaks, often from years of frustration with overly classified papers and knowledge, about the intelligence management failures that led to Japanese success at Pearl Harbor and the turn-around successes that reversed the course of the war within a year. His personal bitterness sometimes gets a bit long in the tooth, but his depth of first hand knowledge more than makes up for it. This book is a must for anyone interested in the beginning and the all-important first year of the war and debunking conspiracy theorists like Toland. Conspiracies become completely unnecessary when stupidity, ego and general incompetence among top politicians and military leaders abound.

I understand that the author had his own agenda in writing this book. But the description of the internecine bureaucratic
infighting rings true. MacArthur's incompetence was inexcusable. Kimmel and Short were sacrificed on the altar
of political expediency. I admire FDR, but this book exposes serious flaws in the management of national security.
