Take a truly enjoyable journey with a pencil!

This 10-page pamphlet introduces the reader to a lead pencil whom we accompany on its life-journey. In accompanying this pencil, we see all that goes into its creation. The point of the pamphlet is to show that the free enterprise system provides what is necessary to keep the economy well-oiled and organized. Through the complexity of the production chain for the pencil, the author would have us see (and agree) that the free enterprise system is efficient and we don't need a central command economy to make production more effective.

The pamphlet was written in 1945 when central command economies were more of a threat than today. This is a fun way to learn about the free enterprise system.

A great intro to supply chains and free market principles

While short, it is a surprisingly thorough introduction to the complexities of supply chains and economics. It builds on the example of building a pencil to demonstrate the folly of trying to centrally plan an economy. We all benefit from the unhindered butterfly effect of building pencils, plus all other products we use everyday. The idea that this could be managed be a central agency, much less a governmental bureaucracy, is demonstrated to be clearly laughable by this essay.

When I read this I was reminded about how inter-related the system is to get something as simply as a pencil into your hands. It all happens without government intervention and unintended consequences. I believe the message of this piece is:"let the system work".
