Far and Away the Best Introduction to This Theory

I have practiced the Theory of Constraints (ToC) for nearly two decades now, and I still use Lisa's book regularly to keep my skills sharp and my thinking on track. Besides explaining the basics of the Theory, Lisa provides examples that anyone can connect to. Her style of presentation is clear, simple without being simplistic. As with all great primers, this volume doesn't try to do it all, nor does it leave someone new to the ToC concepts with the feeling that they're trying to drink from a fire hose. One can read this book in a few hours, or take weeks to work through in stages.

I find this book so helpful as a starting point that I have given away at least two dozen copies to colleagues, and I often suggest it as a "textbook" in quality classes. As long as a quality practitioner doesn't get pulled into the "Six Sigma vs. Lean vs. ToC" (or quality philosophy of choice) wars and miss the point, this volume can help anyone who is interested in learning more and better ways to approach the field of process improvement.

I read various books regarding the Theory of Constraints. Except for the chapter on prerequisite trees, this book explains how to use the theory very well to solve your daily problems. It also gives you a wealth of exercises that you can use to improve your practice of the theory.

It gets to deep for me, makes life more complicated than it deeds to be. If your a cooperate planner then you may lap it up. I read half way through and resold it back via Amazon, so some money back from an expensive book.

user friendly Thinking Process

Every improvement is a change. But every change is not an improvement.
Main message of The Goal: Clarify the organization's purpose..
These ideas bringing us to 3 major questions:

1. What to change ?
Sufficiency based Current Reality Tree and
Necessity based Evaporating Cloud to find the root cause

2. To what to change ?
Sufficiency based Future Reality Tree

3. How to cause to change ?
Sufficiency based Transition Tree (almost know what to do)
Necessity based Prerequisite Tree (no idea how to achieve objective)

These are the foundations of Thinking Process (TP). These are the tools helping us to locate the constraint. Next step is dealing with the constraint by 5 Focusing steps of TOC.
1. Identify the constraint
2. Exploit the constraint
3. Subordinate everything else to the constraint
4. Elevate the constraint
5. Beware of inertia, go back to Step 1.

Sufficiency :
to say that "Y" is an effect of "X" is to say the following:
If X then we must have Y.
Y exists because X exists.

Necessity :
to say that "B" is a necessary condition for "A" is to say the following:
In order to have A, we must have B.
We cannot have A unless B is in place.

The book is realy user friendly. I have understood Legitimate reservations are not only control methods but also helipng to construct the tree.
It is well explained when to use which techniques or do we really need them.
Basic notions and drawing/phrasing guides are stated.
There are some examples in the book. I think this book alone is not enough to try TP on your own.
I will keep reading relavant literature.

Best tutorial on the TOC Thinking Processes available

If you want to understand and apply the TOC Thinking Processes, this is the first book to get.

Like learning to shoot a pistol or hit a speed bag, it's hard to understand the Thinking Processes cold without working through some examples. Lisa Scheinkopf's excellent book demonstrates how to use the Thinking Processes using lots of simple examples from everyday life and business (e.g., whether to keep the dog when moving house, and whether a loss in profit is really due to a price increase). I quickly read the book, then went back and worked through it in detail, writing my own "application notes" along the way. If you do this you will master the Thinking Processes and understand how to apply them in your own work. It's so worth the effort.

A very good book, but the ebook price is outrageous

I've found this to be an excellent book that helps one understand and apply TOC's Thinking Processes. My one issue, and why I've dropped the review from 5 stars to 3, is the ridiculous price for the ebook. I do own the hardcopy, and bought it from Amazon (as I do most of my books).

Now, I'm sure the publisher would respond that the price of the book reflects the value of the book rather than being a component of the cost of book production. I won't necessarily disagree with that, in principle. But a Kindle ebook cannot be loaned out to others like the hardcover book, and that is a major limitation for a professional coach or consultant with a library. I have the hardcopy, and would buy an additional ebook copy IF it was reasonably priced. My colleague, who is currently borrowing my hardcover, would buy an ebook, but not for $44 when the hardcover can be bought for $46. His response: "I'd rather borrow your book for free than spend $44 on the ebook."

So, the ebook pricing has cost this publisher two additional sales, one for me (I'd buy an additional ebook copy just to have it with me) and one for my colleague). Because I am often asked about TOC Thinking Processes and use CRTs and Evaporating Clouds, my clients often inquire about the subject but are also unwilling to spend $50 for a book... but would most likely spend $10. In short, because of erroneous assumptions about pricing ebooks, the publisher is probably only selling a tenth of the ebooks they'd otherwise sell. Please, author, get the ebook rights and sell the book for $10!
