For much of her life—like many Westerners—most of what Pamela Olson knew of the Middle East was informed by headlines and stereotypes. But when she traveled to Palestine in 2003, she found herself thrown with dizzying speed into the realities of Palestinian life.

Fast Times in Palestine is Olson's powerful, deeply moving account of life in Palestine-both the daily events that are universal to us all (house parties, concerts, barbecues, and weddings) as well as the violence, trauma, and political tensions that are particular to the country.

From idyllic olive groves to Palestinian beer gardens, from Passover in Tel Aviv to Ramadan in a Hamas village, readers will find Olson's narrative both suspenseful and discerning. Her irresistible story offers a multi-faceted understanding of the Palestinian perspective on the Israel-Palestine conflict, filling a gap in the West's understanding of the difficult relationship between the two nations. At turns funny, shocking, and galvanizing, Fast Times in Palestine is a gripping narrative that challenges our ways of thinking-not only about the Middle East, but about human nature, cultural identity, and our place in the world.

Críticas

"Pamela Olson's insightful, sometimes shocking, but always deeply human account of the Palestinian reality should be read by anyone who wants to get beyond the myths and misconceptions around the Palestinian struggle. The effortless narrative is driven by encounters with ordinary, and sometimes extraordinary, people sometimes as confused as the rest of the world about their reality. But Olson is clear in laying out the stark truth of dispossession, oppression, and outright racism imposed on the Palestinians—insights all too lacking in news reports and political debate."
—
Chris McGreal, The Guardian

"A moving, inspiring account of life in Palestine that's enormously informative yet reads like a novel!"
—
Rebecca Vilkomerson, Executive Director of Jewish Voice for Peace

"It's love in the time of occupation as Pamela Olson . . . takes us on the emotional roller-coaster of her very personal experience of life in Ramallah. . . A charming book brimming with tension and tragedy, but also with the humor, warmth, everyday foibles and irrepressible hopes of a people determined to live free."
—
Tony Karon, senior editor of TIME Magazine

"Part adventure story, part searing reportage, part love story, and wholly absorbing."
—
Dr. Kenneth Ring, co-author of Letters from Palestine

"Pamela Olson leads the reader on an exciting, funny, at times heart-wrenching journey, carefully deciphering complex political and historical issues. Olson is a talented writer, intelligent and exceptional in her ability to convey both tragedy and hope, remaining morally grounded and refreshingly honest."
—
Ramzy Baroud, author of My Father was a Freedom Fighter

"As an Israeli whose life was shaped by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, I found
Fast Times in Palestine moving and refreshing. Pamela Olson comes to the Middle East with a blank slate and is therefore able to hold up an undistorted mirror to the reality she encounters."
—
Miko Peled, author of The General's Son

"Harrowing, funny, vivid, entertaining and deeply humane,
Fast Times in Palestine opens a rare window into Palestinian life. It’s impossible not to be moved on nearly every page by Pamela Olson’s account of the plight of a stateless people struggling to live with dignity under a mind-boggling 48-year military occupation. Yet Olson also shows us the warmth of a people who, despite their circumstances, display a 'preternatural friendliness and curiosity' in an 'enviable place to call home.' Read this book; it will change everything about the way you see the struggle between Israelis and Palestinians."
—
Sandy Tolan, author of The Lemon Tree

"This is a story by a very smart and fundamentally decent woman who visits Palestine for the first time knowing little about what she will encounter there. Of course, she learns quickly about the horrors of the Israeli occupation and what it means for the local Palestinians.
Fast Times in Palestine is Pamela Olson's attempt to describe the indignities and brutality of Palestinian daily life, and try to make sense of it all. What makes her story so compelling is that she tells it in an honest and straightforward way, not by relying on hot rhetoric. For anyone who wants to learn the truth about life under Israeli occupation, this book is a superb starting point."
—
John J. Mearsheimer, author of Why Leaders Lie

“…the strength of the narrative lies in Olson’s investigation of the personal and mental effects of oppression and war on herself and her newfound friends…Where paradox is as common as breathing, Olson discovers a kind of freedom amid the barbed wire. An empathetic, intriguing memoir.”
—Kirkus Reviews

"More than a travelogue or a polemic, the book is a coming-of-age story, as Olson discovers her voice by directly confronting the challenges of living in a state of institutionalized paradox... Engaging and easy to read, this is a fascinating memoir."
—Publishers Weekly

"An ultimately heartwarming story about an American who learned to love a country and a people despite the trauma of the brutal, decades-old conflict she witnesses occurring around her."
—Library Journal

Pamela Olson grew up in small town Oklahoma and studied physics and political science at Stanford University. After graduating, she realized to her surprise that she didn't want to be a scientist after all and instead began bartending, saved money to travel, and landed unexpectedly in Palestine, where she became a journalist and foreign press coordinator for a Palestinian presidential candidate.

Her website is pamolson.org.

After returning to the US, she worked at a think tank in Washington, DC, trying to bring what she had learned to the halls of power. Eventually she became disillusioned, dropped out of the Beltway crowd, and began writing a book called Fast Times in Palestine, a chronicle of her searing education in the Holy Land and the incredible adventures she had along the way. It was published by Seal Press in March 2013.

She's currently working on a sequel called Palestine, DC, about the "special relationship" between the US and Israel, the rift between Hamas and Fatah, the assault on Lebanon in 2006, the situation in Gaza, and several other topics for folks who read Fast Times and wish to dig a little deeper.

Her writing has also been featured in the International Herald Tribune, CounterPunch, Israel's Occupation Magazine, Mondoweiss, and The Stanford Magazine among other publications.

The author spent the better part of two years living and working in the West Bank in the mid 2000s. The book is at once travelogue, coming of age story, and social and political commentary. She gets to know the Palestinian people in the sort of intimate way that few Westerners do. Cast away your preconceived notions and read this book. I guarantee you will never see the Palestinians in the same way again.

For years, I have followed the author's worldly travels through her website and have enjoyed her ability to bring you first person into what she was experiencing at the moment through her writing style. No matter where she was or what she was doing, it was always a good read and break. Needless to say, I've enjoyed immensely joining her in her travels shared through her writing and it's never been a dull moment.

In the Middle East, I've always had a "build a wall" and let the rest of the world deal with their own problems viewpoint but this book has brought a new meaning to "building a wall" in my mind. The sharing of her experiences in dealing with a "wall" and through the eyes of those who have to deal with one daily has made me think twice.

By bringing her experiences in Palestine and nearby areas to a central location via her book, I'm probably a better citizen of the world in understanding the day to day trials placed at those people's feet who have very little choice or options in the matter. Plus it's expanded my viewpoint of what the world is really like in this part of the world as a resident, not a tourist.

It was about time for her to take the next step and I'm glad she's taken that step seriously with this book.

I chose this book knowing nothing about what to expect-- just wanted a contemporary read about the situation in Palestine. Being an American of Palestinian background I felt I needed to get up on things (and possibly be able to share my learning with others )and this book--from an American woman's perspective--held promise. I was absolutely hooked from the first page. Pam Olson has done an amazing job of not only drawing the reader in to the difficult and volatile life of any one in the West Bank, but almost more importantly drawing the reader in to her amazing travels, her perceptions of the middle east, her ability to meet and bond with new people. I traveled with her at every step, enjoying her subtle comments and humor, being there with her in crusty situations, learning first hand of a culture and people she had before been fairly ignorant about(like many Americans.) The real shift in the book from riveting travel narrative comes with her very real involvement with people she meets and her emotional ride as she became invested in those people and the beautiful places they live in. She is clearly changed inside out from her experiences. There were many upsetting parts of the book--and she revealed what these upsetting things did to her personally, in poignant prose. Many times I had to put the book down and chill--then get back to it. The sad fact is so much of a devastating nature goes on under this occupation, that its a shock for anyone to think that these things can continue with "approval" by the good old USA. I recommended the book to my book club, we read and discussed it, and all thanked me for opening their eyes. Thanks Pam Olson for opening MY eyes as well.

Pamela Olson's book about Palestine really is remarkably good. It has such a wealth of clear and sharp details, smoothly told, conveying a vivid sense of life in a place very different from the United States or other comfortable Western countries. It has many people -- real people, people you can imagine sitting and talking to -- rather than many statistics. It has life on the ground rather than arguments in the political stratosphere.

Olson was one of the typical U.S. college students who (like me, much earlier) knew very little about Palestine or Israel, in part because American news media do such a pathetically bad job of covering the situation there. She learned by going there, and readers unfamiliar with the subject would benefit from going along with her journey through her book. One reviewer suggested "Fast Times in Palestine" will be on school curricula in years to come. The pessimist in me doubts that, but it really should be.

For those who have read this book, consider reading "King's Counsel" by former CIA agent Jack O'Connell. It also is a memoir, but very very different, by someone who knew what was going on behind the scenes in the corridors of power. The two very different books are complementary, in my mind. A memoir called "I Saw Ramallah" by Palestinian writer Mourid Barghouti is also excellent, though now it is 13 years old.

Pamela Olson is a very gifted and talented writer. She has definitely entered the right field for her writing skills. The story reads very easily and is enjoyable to follow.

Now here comes the however, the storyline is a touchy one and I feel it was very biased. Pamela Oslon is obviously very attached to the muslim people as a whole. This is perfectly fine, but her tale of being fair did not come through. Yes she threw a line in or two of feelings for the Israelis, but she never fully developed their side or their views of the situation. A sprinkle or two were done but it was not fairly portrayed.

She gives tales of events that happened in the Gaza or other areas but not through her own encounters and so there are some questions there on the validity of the stories. Interviewing others is not a true picture of her own experience.

Like I said, it was very easy to follow and very easy to read but extremely one sided. Some stories were writtne without developing the reasons for the Israelis actions for why they do things as they do. Look, noone is perfect, every tribe has their unfortunate representatives, however, to really see a situation for what it is would be better than protraying ones self as fair and balanced while giving a very one sided view.

Again, thank you Pamela Olson for sharing your adventures, I only wish they were truly fair and balanced. Perhaps you should visit with poor homeless Israelis that have no where to live and have no food due to the destruction caused by the people of Gaza and others. The two people are so similar, if only they can see past the horrors that have been created.

This wasn't what I was expecting. When I purchased it, I didn't read the description closely enough and thought I was getting a novel. When I sat down to read it and realized my mistake, I groaned. I decided to give it a chance anyway and I am so glad I did. I was hooked right away. It's a memoir that reads like a novel. I could vividly picture the land she was seeing and the people she was talking to....and the horrors she was experiencing. This was so eye opening. It put a face to the crimes of humanity that have been occurring over in the middle east. It's more than war and politics, it's PEOPLE. We are so sheltered here in the US and take so much for granted.

I cannot fathom living in a place where the sound of gunfire in the background is so common, you don't even flinch anymore. Where you can't just drive across a state line to visit your loved ones. Where you are constantly in fear of losing someone you care about. Where you have to deal with such heavy oppression on a daily basis. Despite all of that, the people Pamela encountered sound so beautifully gracious and faithful. I can see why she felt compelled to return to them.

It is clear that if she has "picked a side", she has chosen to side with the Palestinians. That said, she shows how Israeli's suffer as well. It isn't completely one sided....it's fairly balanced. It doesn't come across as propaganda, as some reviewers imply.

Thank you for having the courage to share your experiences and for opening my eyes to the things that we DON'T read in the news or see on T.V. I look forward to more!

Fast Times is a travelogue, first and foremost. It details Olson's experience in a vastly misrepresented and misunderstood part of the world. Olson is very aware of the controversies surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and seems to deliberately avoid political statements, allowing her own experiences to speak for the themselves and the reader to come to their own conclusions.

If anything, Olson reaches a bit too far when she reflects on lack of communication and misunderstanding as roots to the conflict. She desperately wants to avoid blaming the Israelis and makes a point of presenting her Israeli friends' shock when exposed to the conditions in the West Bank. At the same time, however, that shock is being presented by a small town girl from Oklahoma, as if the person being shocked doesn't have access to the same books and internet that she does. Never mind that the Israeli lives just over the Wall.

Fast Times is an emotional book, and I imagine that it is particularly so for those who can relate to the author's experience. The conflict of the occupation is mirrored somewhat by the author's conflict as an American, whose government funds and protects the Israeli government, and whose struggle to face the everyday tragedies in Palestine is laced with the guilt of her own privilege.

I strongly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a new perspective on the Occupation, whether you're new to the subject or an expert. It provides a unique lens through which to view the conflict, one that emphasizes the humanity and heartbreak of life in Occupied Palestine.

This is the intriguing and riveting story of a young American woman from Oklahoma and her two year adventure living, volunteering, and working in Palestine. She started on a backpacking trip during a time when she was questioning her beliefs and taking time from her university studies. She decided to travel in the mid east intending, for reasons of cost, to omit Palestine and Israel. Through chance meetings with and Israeli and a Palestinian on the Red Sea coast, she ended up in Palestine, where she introduced her Russian-Israeli to a Palestinian who spoke Russian, having been studying medicine in Russia. She writes very well and her description of the hospitality of the Palestinians she met and lived with, and of their life under occupation is fascinating and eye-opening. I've since bought copies for several of my friends... who are similarly impressed.

I have been studying the Israeli Palestinian conflict for years and have been to both Israel and Palestine in my pursuit of knowledge and understanding. Therefore I have seen the situation for myself which is of course very different to how our media presents it. I have to say without reservation that this is one of the best books I have read on the subject. Books on subjects like these can be quite dry or partisan; however this book does not fall into any of those traps. Pamela Olson somehow manages to convey exactly what is going on with quite detailed commentary on the historical and political landscape of the region without compromising the rhythm of the narrative. Most importantly of all she does this with grace and humility and with her humanity intact. This is no mean feat when one is living with those in an occupation and witnessing the daily brutality that ensues on both sides. I have urged my friends to read this book and urge you to do the same. With an open heart and an open mind. If you didn't know much about the conflict and why things are the way they are, you will by the end of this book. And if you did know hopefully this will galvanise you to become more involved. Maybe then one day in the not too distant future the Palestinians will finally have the justice which has been denied them for far too long.

Fast Times in Palestine is an honest and balanced account of a situation many North Americans would be shocked to find they know nothing about. It is a fascinating read, at times hilarious, at times heart-breaking but mostly it informs the reader of what is really going on in the land once known as Palestine. Pamela Olson corrects our misconceptions in recounting her day-to-day encounters with both Palestinians and Israelis. Her book is an antidote to the daily bombardment of manufactured "news" designed to shape our opinions about the peoples living in the region we broadly refer to as the Middle East. This book should be required reading for anyone in a position to direct policy and to make decisions vis-à-vis Israel and the surrounding nations.

The long running Palestinian/Israeli conflict has been with all of us for most of our lives yet few understand what is going on there. We see news reports with one point of view, which are then contradicted by another - it is confusing. Pamela Olson sets out - with no agenda - to travel outside her homeland, the United States. Her travels in Palestine and Israel, the people she meets, the places she visits, the events that take place, form the basis of this book. Her account is entertaining, lively and intelligent. Olson is a young 21st century American woman who strips away the dense, complex 60+ year-old-history and politics to tell what she saw, as she saw it. Not a politician nor an ivory towered intellectual, she has produced a refreshingly modern account of life in Palestine today with honesty - all too scarce a currency in the modern Middle East.
