In 1923, reports Mango, a satirical magazine ran a cartoon showing the three faces of Turkey--the nation, the assembly and the government. All were identical: the features were those of Mustafa Kemal (1881-1938), an army officer who had salvaged the core of defeated Turkey after the 1914-1918 war to create a secular republic. A decade later, still trying to structure an identity for what remained of the polyglot, ramshackle Ottoman Empire, he decreed--as virtual dictator of a nation now largely populated by Muslims--that inhabitants had to take surnames. For himself, he adopted Ataturk, literally Father Turk. Mango (a retired BBC expert on Turkey and author of three previous books on the country) gives this man, one of the least-known nation-builders of the last century, full treatment, from his earliest days to his ascension to power and his death, from cirrhosis at the age of 57. Few leaders have so modernized an ancient society, instituting radical changes in dress, religion, government, education--even the alphabet. Ataturk abolished the monarchy, divided WWI's victors bent on partitioning all of Turkey, defeated rapacious Greeks intent on expanding their expatriate communities in Asia and destroyed or co-opted his domestic rivals. That so much of his legacy survives is evidence of his success. Mango's admiration for Ataturk doesn't keep him from displaying the dictator's arrogance, ruthlessness and authoritarianism; his Turkish expertise enables him to flesh out Ataturk's complex life via sources he translated himself. Although there is no shortage of information on Mustafa Kemal Atat?rk in Turkish, no comprehensive biography has appeared recently in English. Mango's new book fills that gap in superlative fashion. Mango, born in Istanbul and fluent in Turkish, has published numerous articles and three other books on Turkey. Now more than ever, Atat?rk is a controversial figure in Turkey, so new sources on him continue to appear, on which Mango relies heavily. Almost unknown in the West in 1919, when he became the leader of the Turkish nationalist movement, Atat?rk had already accomplished much and set his course long before the collapse of the Ottoman Empire at the end of World War I. English readers are fortunate that Mango could distill what took place in Atat?rk's life up to the founding of the Turkish Republic in 1923. This is a balanced and exhaustively researched account of the influential life of one of the most complex and controversial figures in 20th-century world history. Given its scholarly nature, it is highly recommended for academic and special Middle East or military collections and for larger public libraries.

I purchased this book in preparation for a trip to Turkey and am now writing from Pamukkale about half way.

In order to understand modern Turkey, one needs to come to terms with both the myth and reality of Ataturk. This book attempts to do so without the hero worship and hagiography found in other works. I other words, Ataturk is treated like a real man with both strengths and faults.

The book helped prepare me for my visit to Anıt Kabir - the Ataturk museum and mausoleum in Ankara. It helped me cut through the myth-making and to know the key players and politics before starting the very long, informative, visit.

I would give the book 5 stars if it included an annotated list of key people (the Turkish names blurred a little as I read) and a time-line.

As for myself, I have a very old degree in history and am some what critical of poor technique. This book does not suffer from many faults in research, attribution, and style though it is very, very long.

This is the kind of book I enjoy, Mango simply states facts and moves on without much embellishment. As a result, it is quite dry. If you're the type of person who enjoys colourful story telling within a history, then this book is probably not for you. If you're like me, you'll simply enjoy the facts being dryly described. Mango does include interesting stories and primary sources to break up some of the straightforward information.

Beyond the descriptions of Ataturk and his life, it also goes into detail about some of his colleagues, World War I, and the Republic of Turkey in general. I learned about a lot more than just Ataturk in this biography, Mango gives the reader a great political setting in the late Ottoman Empire and early Republic of Turkey to surround the life of this great man.

Content Summary: This book is sweeping in scope, beginning with the Ottoman period just before World War One, and outlining the major CUP leaders who rebelled against and effectively ended the power of the monarchy. Ataturk would later of course finish that job, abolishing the sultan and caliph positions permanently. Mango focuses mostly on the political and military life of Ataturk, as well as religious and linguistic reforms ushered in. He also comments on Ataturk's social life and personal thoughts and habits. Mango is to be commended for such a comprehensive job, with some summary and comments about the legacy of Ataturk later.

Analytical Review: This is a big book, but it reads like and even longer book because it is so crammed with details and names. Readers will likely find themselves paging for names and geographical sources, a convenient summary of short biographies appears at the end for assistance. A very enlightening book, which only the patient and interested reader should pick up - but those will find it immensely rewarding.

probably the best if compared to similar works

A well documented bibliography, probably the best if compared to similar works, by the recently deceased british, but Turkey born author Andrew Mango. The only critic i can find is about the writer's style that's a little bit repetitive. Anyway very good references and notes, a useful alphabetical index with names, places and topics, a chronology, and reasoned bibliography are making this 666 pages work super accessible. to any approach.
