This very erudite and faithfully Catholic book is a translation of the Spanish original published a few years back. Its author is an expert in his field and has contributed widely to Biblical scholarship. What I appreciated from the outset is the fact that he stresses the fact that good Catholic biblical exegesis cannot today dispense with the historical-critical method. This is important to keep in mind, because even today there are some "fundamentalist" attitudes, even among Catholics, towards Biblical interpretation.

That said, he also points out that the Bible is incomprehensible without Tradition and that each draws and enlightens the other. Therefore, faith, as the title proclaims, is the fount from which good Catholic Biblical exegesis must draw. It is not enough to solely rely on the historical-critical approach - something more is necessary; namely, the light of faith, and above all the Person of Jesus Christ.

Therefore, this book avoids the Scylla of "fundamentalism"and the Charybdis of "liberalism" and lays down principles for sound Catholic exegesis.

However, my only disappointment with the book lay in that there was less actual textual examination of the Pentateuch than I had hoped. I was hoping for a book which examined in detail the various sources of the Pentateuch from a Catholic perspective and gave the reader some insight into how a Catholic ought to approach the text. Instead, most of the book is a history of exegesis over the last 250 years, of both Catholics and Protestants, believes and nonbelievers alike.
