In this short introduction to ecclesiology, Nichols does an excellent job covering a lot of ground. His consideration of the four marks is by no means exhaustive, and I do not think he synthesizes the four very well, but he offers some great thoughts to begin thinking about them. He goes back to these points in the latter half of the book, considering them with the help of other theologians.

The book really shines in his introduction to four "masters" in ecclesiology: Hans Urs Von Balthasar, Henri de Lubac, Jean Tillard, and Charles Journet. All of the authors had a massive output of writings on the Church, so it is a great accomplishment to condense and distil their most poignant contributions to ecclesiology. Nichols is clear that his work is only the smallest of introductions, and his work serves as a bibliography from which one can then locate many books and essays that expand on all the themes contained here.
