His second book, Insight Meditation, is my preferred read and the one that I buy for other beginning meditators. It is written some 16 years later and shows his ability to polish himself into a more flowing and engaging author, his progress as a meditator, and his deep engagement with the Dharma that underlies his dedication and his efforts. He is a serious Dharma practitioner; this book is not adulterated with contemporary philosophies. He communicates how the timeless and powerful principles taught by the Buddha can lead us toward total freedom within this lifetime.

Great book, but know what you're getting

This book is very good, but I think people should be aware of what they're buying before they buy it. This book discusses some Buddhist concepts that are behind Vipassana meditation, and discusses why people meditate, and what the short term and long term benefits to meditation are. What the book is short on, however, is the specifics of how to meditate, although it does discuss that in a short section. Instead of it focuses more on the why.

It's still a very enlightening and spiritual book that I recommend reading, which is why I gave it 4 stars. However if what you are looking for specifically is a step-by-step instructional, you may want to get another book in addition to this one.

EDIT: I wanted to edit my original review to add that I have since found a better book when it comes to actual instruction on Insight or Vipassana meditation: Mindfulness in Plain English. While I still recommend Goldstein's book when it comes to philosophically investigating the reasons behind meditation, Mindfulness in Plain English has more in terms of explicit step-by-step instructions for meditating, which I think would benefit someone totally new to the practice more.

Great classic by a great author. Not a primer for meditation instruction, there are other excellent works in that regard, but rather expands upon the purpose and usefulness of meditation and deal with any issues that may come up. Good addition for any serious meditator.

Great For Westerners Learning Buddhism for Daily Life

I've read lots of books by Western Buddhist teachers. This may well be the one I have learned the most from. Written in very short rich segments, it lends itself outstandingly to group discussion and to a busy person's schedule where brevity and simplicity are invaluable. I appreciate Goldstein's focus on every day application, and his almost entirely steering clear of doctrines like reincarnation. He does take on the most difficult Buddhist concept of "no self" and devote a number of segments to try to make it understandable. I found this section very helpful, though nothing can make this concept unchallenging. This is a book I will hold onto, and revisit occasionally when my practice hits a rough patch, and will lend or give to friends interested in this path.

Good guide to the practice on insight mediation - particularly strong on how pushing uncomfortable feelings emotionally (called aversion by Goldstein) can be worked with in meditation.

4 stars not 5 because I am more familiar with , and feeling a stronger connection to, the work of Jack Kornfield. I'm also not a huge fan of the aphoristic style of writing - the book has a lot of one and two page chapters.

While not as daunting as some of the meditation related books I've checkout out lately, Joseph Goldstein's books are definitely not for the casual reader, or even 'serious beginners' (the Ven. Henepole Guratana's book, "Mindfulness in Plain English," is the one I'd recommend in that case).That said, once a person's started a daily practice, and are trying to understand the nut's and bolts of working with one's thoughts, or sitting with difficult emotions, Goldstein's books are invaluable, providing the knowledge and inspiration to keep at it, esp. when, one's, "internal weather" gets rough. (Also, check out his dharma talks & guided meditations at dharmaseed.org).
