In the development of contemporary architecture, no one has had a greater influence than Louis I. Kahn, whose many buildings include the Salk Institute, the Yale Study Center, and the Exeter Library. He is remembered, however, not only as a master builder, but also as one of the most important and creative thinkers of the twentieth century. For Kahn, the study of architecture was the study of human beings, their highest aspirations and most profound truths. He searched for forms and materials to express the subtlety and grandeur of life. In his buildings we see the realization of his vision: luminous surfaces that evoke a fundamental awe, silent courtyards that speak of the expansiveness and the sanctity of the spirit, monumental columns and graceful arches that embody dignity and strength. Updated with a new preface, this classic work is a major statement on human creativity, showing us Louis Kahn as architect, visionary, and poet.

This book is wonderful if you're a fan of Kahn's work. The book is unique in that the text is Kahn's original words. However, this book is not really a textbook - it functions more like a coffee table book. It has lots of photos and few words.

This was for my husband, to replace his battered old copy. It was a watershed book for him many years ago, and he still values it highly.

I always was a Louis Kahn admirer since my architecture student's years. This book is an excellent summary of his work.

This is a very cheaply produced book. Although the readings and insights may be useful or well done, the overall impression was awful. Be aware if you are looking for a book with images and descriptions of Kahn's works this is not it. The few photographs in the book are all black and white and very dark and grainy. They look more like cheap photocopies than an actual printed book and are almost impossible to view any of the details shown. Not recommended at all unless your main purpose in reading is more to have a textbook explaining in lectures some of Kahn's architectural ideas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Inspiring Text!
Reviewed in India on November 1, 2016
Very simple black and white book, with beautiful text of Kahn's lectures.
The text is very simple and looks at Kahn's philosophy of the unmeasurable. Very inspiring and is a MUST READ for those who seek to be architects.

It is not a coffee table book with colourful images.

Pensavo fosse un libro da guardare e sono rimasto deluso. È però un libro da leggere e traspare lo spirito, la visione e perfino la poesia di un architetto per cui la architettura nasce dall'intimo sentire

5.0 out of 5 stars louis kahn's view on architecture is still valid if not more important than it was
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 25, 2012
After reading Frampton's 'Studies in tectonic culture' and with the recent development of, so called, emergent architecture I start thinking that Louis I Kahn should be re valued in the history of Modern architecture. His ideas on architecture is still valid and resonant now. even stronger than those famous architects like Mies or Corbusier or Wright. It seems to me that Louis I Kahn's concept of Order is no different from what Michael Hensel or Ciro Najile calls 'material system'. even more there is poetic aspects on top of it. Not only philosophical level but also in the details of built projects I personally often check and learn from Kahn's details when I design buildings. Without exceptions I get so impressed by the details every time I see it again. This book is concise and lucid. When I first read this book about 18 years ago I was only barely impressed. however, I read it now I can see more in the concise and lucid text. definitely must read book.
