It's not often that one finds a business success book written by a self-made millionaire who is so humble, funny, and down-to-Earth. James Cusumano's book BALANCE provides a unique perspective on building inspired business from your passions and interest in such a way that helps ensure prosperity and growth---for you AND your business. The subtitle of this book is "The Business-Life Connection," but it might just as well have been, "Finding Success by Following Your True Passions in Life."

One of the fascinating threads running through this autobiography is that each time Cusumano sets and reaches a goal, he creates a new goal so he can continue on. The eldest of ten children of American immigrant parents from Italy, Cusumano quickly discovered the power, genius and magic of boldness in taking active steps forward in pursuit of his dreams. Young Cusumano dove into learning to play piano with help from an Army buddy friend of his Dad's as a self-proclaimed "student-in-a-hurry-with-a-mission." Cusumano was in a hurry to play music for school dances, but that dream was quickly eclipsed by bigger dreams of playing 50's rock and roll, since after three years of lessons he was singing lead vocals and playing keyboard in a friend's band. Not only did Cusumano spring to national fame and attention as a musician in the group Royal Teens of "Short Shorts" fame, but he went on to get a PhD in physical chemistry, and then launched his own successful Silicon Valley start-up company. From there, Cusumano made a feature film, and is currently running a boutique chateau hotel in Prague, Czech Republic.

"Balance" is an excellent book. This title explores the different sides of us as human beings, both in the aspect of our business lives and our personal "essence," the thing that makes us who we are and helps us decide what our course in life will be.

What I really liked about this book was that it wasn't stringent and boring as many self help books tend to be. The author uses a neutral voice to approach his subject matter, allowing the reader to implement themselves into the material and apply it to their life.

The author takes the time to explore the decisions we make in life and explain how to get what you really want, without sacrificing success. If you are looking for a book to help you make sense of your present situation or the future, this one is one to consider.

I would recommend this book for those who are looking for answers to the "What do I want to do now?" question. A great addition to your shelf.

James A. Cusumano has had an interesting, diverse, and lucrative work/career life: he says that he is now in the midst of his "fifth professional life." In his teens he was a rock star, then a scientist and corporate research executive with Exxon, then co-founder and chairman of a (very successful) Silicon-Valley-based company, then founder, CEO, and executive producer of a feature film company, and currently he and his wife have purchased and renovated a castle in Prague, which has become an internationally recognized castle hotel and spa. As he says, he has learned some things along the way, and in this book he shares "the fruits of his journey." Although his expertise is in business, it seems that throughout he has stayed true to himself, and managed to balance meaning, fulfillment, and success in both this personal and business life.

The first part of "Balance," naturally, is autobiographical, from childhood to today, written with a lively and self-aware style. He gives just enough background for readers to get to know him, without being self-serving. This intriguing journey alone makes the book worth picking up. Part II offers a "formula" for creating a fulfilling life: addressing the critical issue of how to achieve balance in both personal and professional life. This is the heart of the book, and James is both a great role model and dynamic cheerleader for uncovering profound principles for living what he calls our "Essence." Drawing from his own experiences--the cross-roads he encountered, learning how to listen to the wise counsel of others, honoring his own inner essence compass--he provides a step-by-step formula for identifying and capturing your own essence.

James Cusumano's book "Balance: The Business-Life Connection" is about the difference servant leadership, or conscious leadership, can make in an organization. As he notes more than once, about 80% of people don't like their jobs, mostly due to not being appreciated by those in leadership positions. While Cusumano's coverage is very good, unfortunately most managers will not likely become conscious leaders anytime soon.

In the early 1900's bosses were dictators, treating employees as servants. Towards the last few decades of the 1900's more and more benefits were given to employees along with more autonomy, and bosses became more of a team leader than an authoritarian. This latter model mostly tried to maintain staff members by giving them raises and treating them with more respect. But for millennia people have known that everyone needs to know their life matters, and slowly leadership books are taking this into account. Employees number one request today is appreciation, not money, and more leaders are beginning to understand this.

Cusamano provides a lot of outstanding quotes and cites his sources, something not enough authors do. He also provides research on his claims and footnotes his references, which is most helpful as he is not simply giving his opinion. Along with standard leadership examples like Lincoln, Churchill and Einstein, he includes his own experience and the impact of Steve Jobs and Apple. He shares the pros and cons of each approach.

His definition of mission and vision is as helpful as any I have seen: "Your vision should create a picture in your mind's eye of how you want your world to be...Your mission should summarize the role you want to play in helping to move your world in that direction.
