My cousin and I have made a pact to watch out for each other and either arrange to share a room in the Alzheimer's unit or find whatever we can to help prevent this deterioration of the brains of incredible people. I am quite interested in why ketosis works for epilepsy and was already researching if it could help with people heading into Alzheimer's. This is well written and heart-wrenching. I am so impressed with this love story of dedication and devotion to a marriage, family, and medicine!

My husband has Alzheimer’s disease and I highly recommend this book. Dr. Newport was one of several doctors that participated in a series titled “Awakening from Alzheimer’s” and everything that was discussed by the doctors leads me to believe that they are on the right track to find a cure (or a way to lessen the devastation of this horrid disease). Diet, nutrition, supplements (no the doctors do not sell you anything) the medications we use, sugar and so on are all risk factors for this disease. Dr. Newport’s husband also has Alzheimer’s disease and what she found to help him is nothing short of amazing. I believe that it’s not too soon to begin taking steps to lower your risk factors and this book is a great place to start.

This is a must read by everyone. Mary Newport's story is of her husband's early onset of Alzheimer's disease which progressed very rapidly to a point where his end was apparent, He was in his mid 50's when this happened. Dr. Newport, however, couldn't just sit by and watch him disintigrate. She did something about it, by researching the WEB and learning about any therapys that were being developed. As she learned more, she chanced on a site that told of a ketone regimine that was showing promise. She knew that ketones were manufactured in the body naturally by the liver's transforming medium chain fatty chains into ketones which then traveled to all parts of the body and to the brain, displacing the use of sugars in the cells and mitochondria. Mary knew that coconut oil is mostly made of medium chains fatty acids and decided to give her husband the oil in his foods. The results were literally miraculous, as here husband's Alzheimer's symptoms lessened and he came back from the brink of complete breakdown. In a second part of the book, Dr. Newport tells of her efforts to tell the world of this discovery, giving the experiences of her own husband and those of many others who also benefited. The last part of the book is to much of the research being done on causes and treatments of Alzheimer's using ketone therapy, and also research on possible causes of the diseas - the misunderstanding of the whole carbohydrate and fat debate and how our modern society of de-natured foods and the eating of low-fat diets, along with eating large amounts of processed sugars is likely the cause of a number of modern diseases of the brain and body. This book was the clincher for me, as my mother and sister both had Alzheimer's. They both were treated for high cholesterol for many years, probably with statin drugs, which research now shows destroys brain cells and is probably a main cause of brain diseases. I have started taking coconut oil daily, along with cutting out all processed carbohydrates and am already noticing some positive changes and results. I say Thank You, Dr. Newport!

One cannot appreciate the pain and hopelessness associated to the caregivers of the victims of Alzheimers. This book details how hope was discovered, how the disease can be turned around (there's no money in it for Big Pharma so they aren't interested - surprise, surprise). There is true hope and the turning around of this disease through a common food - removed incidentally by the promotion of Crisco post-WW2 - coconut oil. Substitute it in cooking where other oils are called for - consume two tablespoons a day, minimum (at first - boost intake depending upon severity of the disease but you can use it as a preventive if there's dementia in your family history) and read this book for guidance. Turning the disease around is curing it - when was the last time you heard about a cure from a doctor outside of treating an infected hangnail? There is hope here for Alzheimers and other type dementia victims as well as other neuropathies like Parkinsons (I know a case personally where the disease is turning around from a multi-year downward progress) and ALS. Get this book and use it to help others.

I work with people with dementia and I can't believe that something as simple as coconut oil can stop Alzheimer's in it's tracks. This is better than anything the drug companies have come up with, a true miracle. The book has blown me away. I am taking coconut oil daily since reading Mary Newport book. I have also managed to persuade my husband to try it as we both have things in our background that predispose us to manifesting Alzheimer's as we age. The story of Mary Newport and her husband is truly amazing and inspirational. I admire how hard Mary has worked to bring this information to the attention of the public and it is not only people with dementia who will benefit from Mary's insights but those of us who may go on to develop Alzheimer's in later life. This book suggests that simple dietary changes - like adding in coconut oil to what you eat could make a big difference to the progression of the disease.
