Having been 12 when Vietnam fell, I have the memories seared into me (I had a large map of S. Vietnam on my wall and tracked the fall in April, though I did have that brief hope at Xuan Loc!). And until someone writes the same work after the archives of the DRV, PRC, and former Soviet Union are all fully opened for scholars, this magisterial work will have to do. I can't say enough good things about the text itself. With outstanding Notes, Bibliography, and Index. This book literally brought tears to my eyes and was hard to read just due to the memories. But it was well worth it.
HOWEVER, this is yet another work that suffers from too few maps that are put in odd places. This work would get 5 stars from me if only there had been more and better maps! Why do authors and publishers skimp on this critical tool for such a text!?!?
And a minor grip. I wish he'd broken down the IV Corp material into its own chapter and expanded upon it. Since the ARVN actually triumphed there. Unfortunately, this is "buried" in chapter 15 under "Standing Firm in the Delta (pgs. 402-407).
For an equally good account covering essentially the same material but from a seasoned journalist's perspective, also including the falls of Cambodia and Laos, see Isaacs 1983 work, Without Honor. And for a similar experience, though a bit shorter, for just Cambodia, read the magisterial work by Wilfred Deac, Road to the Killing Fields: The Cambodian War of 1970-1975 (1997).
