Blue Covenant: The Global Water Crisis and the Coming Battle for the Right to Water Paperback – June 1, 2009
In a book hailed by Publishers Weekly as a “passionate plea for access-to-water activism,” Blue Covenant addresses an environmental crisis that―together with global warming―poses one of the gravest threats to our survival.
How did the world’s most vital resource become imperiled? And what must we do to pull back from the brink? In “stark and nearly devastating prose”, world-renowned activist and bestselling author Maude Barlow―who is featured in the acclaimed documentary Flow―discusses the state of the world’s water. Barlow examines how water companies are reaping vast profits from declining supplies, and how ordinary people from around the world have banded together to reclaim the public’s right to clean water, creating a grassroots global water justice movement. While tracing the history of international battles for the right to water, she documents the life-and-death stakes involved in the fight and lays out the actions that we as global citizens must take to secure a water-just world for all (Booklist).
“Sounds the water alarm with conviction and authority.” ―Kirkus Reviews
“This book proves that water deserves another destiny.” ―Eduardo Galeano
“Blue Covenant will inspire civil society movements around the world.” ―Vandana Shiva

- Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2012Read this book for a limnology course, but can't believe it's not a common name like Gore's Inconvenient Truth. This book gives a complete picture on the current situation on global water and how we got here. It's eye opening to see we should be at least as concerned with the global water crisis as we are with climate change. Well-written and organized and definitely inspires change!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2008This is a must read for everyone on this planet! Filled with alarming facts and information. Most people are completely unaware of the water crisis, so read this book and tell everyone you know.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2015This author has written several books on the subject, and this one didn't really meet my expectations of her describing the real global fresh water shortage. It DID have a lot of facts about international organizations naming 'front' organizations - supposedly chartered to alleviate the situation of dwindling supplies, but really a front for private corporations to make money on the water shortage.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2017I read this when it came out and ordered it to share with friends.
Some of the info is dated but doesn't take away from the underlying message.
Well worth the time
- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2017Very important and well documented read that encoumpases challenges around the world that should not be avoided, when it comes to providing fresh water to humans. The author establishes her credentials and passion on every page.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2013The book is filled with information about the growing lack of usable water for
people all over the planet, but it is not a balanced report. The writer is
a crusader for water justice (a very good cause) but will put off readers with
this long and not very well presented book.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2016Not a preacher about the future of our water supply. Just a person giving information and facts gathered over a lifetime of studying the quality and quantity of our water. Excellent book.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2018Bought it for a sociology class and was shocked at what it revealed about the water bottling companies. I haven't bought any bottled water since I read this book.
