Who Speaks for Islam?: What a Billion Muslims Really Think Hardcover – February 25, 2008
Purchase options and add-ons
Are we on the verge of an all-out war between the West and 1.3 billion Muslims? When the media searches for an answer to that question, they usually overlook the actual views of the world’s Muslims.
Who Speaks for Islam? is about this silenced majority. This book is the product of the Gallup World Poll’s massive, multiyear research study. As part of this groundbreaking project, Gallup conducted tens of thousands of interviews with residents of more than 35 nations that are predominantly Muslim or have significant Muslim populations.
Gallup posed questions that are on the minds of millions: Is Islam to blame for terrorism? Why is there so much anti-Americanism in the Muslim world? Who are the extremists? Where are the moderates? What do Muslim women really want?
Grounded in Gallup World Poll data, not in contentious rhetoric, Who Speaks for Islam? brings data-driven evidence — the voices of a billion Muslims, not those of individual “experts” or “extremists”— to one of the most heated and consequential debates of our time.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2014This book did for me what I somewhat feebly tried to represent in my encounters with those who provide a forum for discussing all of what they have come to know about Islam and Muslims from Western media, most of which makes me cringe. In my close encounters and intimate friendships with Muslims over the past fifty years, I know only those who share my values of family and education and who cherish their Muslim identity. So I am saddened when I hear topics for discussion groups that center on events from the media that are indeed gruesome, but then get generalized to a majority. I am so grateful that John Esposito bothered to do the tedious, scientific study of the silent Muslim majority to dispel these myths. I first heard him speak years ago when his book, "The Deamonization of Islam" was published. I just finished reading Susan Abulhawa's book, "Mornings in Jenin" , another book that would help others understand.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2013This book has served as a good appetizer to many more interesting reads. It has served to clarify many a confusing points about the current struggle between the west and Muslim world. It has strengthened my point of view that a little knowledge of each other goes a long way in shunning fear, disrespect and hatred of other human beings. There were surprises on every page.
For those who are making comparisons between Nazism and current situation in Muslim countries, I can only say one thing. If the objective findings in this book could not quench your hatred, nothing will. If we do not want to believe we never will. I hope all of us can live in peace and harmony. After all all of us want peace and basic human needs to be met fairly. Justice rules supreme!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2017There is a saying that partial truth is worse than a lie and this book is full with both. The Gallup Inc. lost direction when polls were allowed to be as shallow as this. I personally am interested in understanding the Islamic problem. My urge for truth and facts finding brought me to look for a balance in my study, namely to hear and read what the other side is saying and writing. I learned from Nonie Darwish books of the existence of "Who speaks for Islam", decided to buy it and unfortunately the outcome for my study is Null, an empty case. This book is different from the information I receive, through the media and books, from my expert teachers (M.Keidar, N.Darwish, W.Sultan, A.Hirsi Ali, B.Gabriel, I.Manji, P.Geller), which is comprehensive and based on facts and confirmations.
Here are some highlighted misleading statements:
1. Statement on page 7: "Islam means 'a strong commitment to god' and shares the same Arabic root as the word for peace, or salaam." This statement is based on the ability of the authors to ignore the statistics of over 36,000 verses of Islamic scriptures which are calling to eliminate non Islamists and urge Islamists to take action for it.
2. On the same paragraph on page 7, the following statement is: "Some Muslim theologians define Islam as attaining peace through commitment to god will." The authors bring this statement without mentioning that submission to Islam is behind this "peaceful statement", otherwise we are dealing here with Islamists murdering non Islamists.
3. The prominent lie pages 17, 18 under the title: "Jihad: the struggle to god", is hiding the truth that Jihad is the commandment to kill us all, non Islamists, unless we convert to Islam and it is based on total disregarding the enormous hate to non Islamists, which is being reflected from almost every page of the Koran, including frequent repetition of horrible words and slanders to non Islamists.
4. On page 28 the statement: "The Islam war ethic prohibits attacking civilians." is based on the ability to ignore the live pictures and exhibits from ISIS, Aasad, Hizbulla, Hamas and all other Islamic based movements. All of them are obliged to kill, according to the Islamic scriptures, whoever is suspected of doing something against Islam, without a trail and without a chance to be brought to a trail.
The authors of this book are using the "Taqiyya" method of Islam (The permission and obligation to lie) in the traditional way in order to feed us with lies and misleading information, for the sake of spreading Islam and supporting the Islamic Dictators. Don't let your judgment be diverted, the expert teachers I listed here are the only ones who actually act to save and rescue the poor Muslims out of their cage rather than the authors of this book.
This is not a recommendation to ignore this book, but a suggestion to hold it until one has an available time for comprehensive study. The answer to the authors should be sharp and clear: Your deception attempt failed. You failed to put us to sleep. We are awaked and ready to protect our planet for the sake of the future generations.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2016An excellent, well-written documentation of data collected by an extensive and well-planned survey. I highly recommend the book to anyone who prefers to know of themselves through study and personal experience who are our friends rather than accepting what the media keep feeding to us about who are our enemies. The battle is not between religions but rather, as always, between good and evil. Are we being led to think otherwise? All people who truly live their religion can live together in peace and harmony whether Muslim, Jew, Christian, Buddhist, or Hindu. I have associated with persons of each faith. Let us not let those who claim religion as a reason for violence destroy the trust and commonality that can exist between people who truly desire to live their faith.
