As usual Mark Steyn manages to be hilarious, erudite, and dead-serious at the same time. He pulls no punches in After America, and while reading this excellent book, I frequently didn't know whether to laugh or cry. The author's command of the evidence is undeniable, and his vivid descriptions of the decline of Western Civilization are both frightening and familiar. Crushing debt, out-of-control immigration, denial, and near-universal insouciance are rapidly destroying the West -- right now.

Will the American people take heed of the dreary (and increasingly dangerous) state of our world and face up to our responsibilities as citizens of the sole super-power, or will we remain paralyzed and incapable of taking action until it is, quite simply, too late?

Review for America Alone by Mark Steyn. I know it's in the wrong spot but I left it for those interested.in his books.Important read because the world ultimately does.reflect the actual demographics. This is an alarming tale by Mark Steyn. But the book is well researched and Steyn points out the alarming trends that will ultimately change the face.of the earth. It's a numbers game with demographics and the big loser is the culture and fiber of declining nation's whom don't produce enough off spring to keep their cultures alive . The big winners in the numbers game is Muslims and the big losers are everyone else.

Every page is Potent and Prophetic

After America is the kind of book that defines your thoughts. You are never sure if you already felt/knew that or if his delivery is so flawless that your wooed right in. In either account this is a must read. If you call yourself a democrat,republican or independent those are just linguistic tricks to maintain a course of thought. As a country we need to leave party politics and start doing what's best not what the media cojoles us into believeing. Like he states in the book "one party wants to bail the ship with a thimble and the other with a tea cup" I am paraphrasing. Unfortunantly, I think our fate is already sealed and the rope that binds us will be held by our own hands. One overarching theme in the book is presidents and government no longer do anything they just have thoughts (and attempt to control yours through concepts like diversity and your new rights ...free health care, food, housing). 16 trillion in debt and can anyone point to some"thing" they have done.What's there to show? No party is innocent. Bush tied the noose and Obama stuck Uncle Sam's neck in and jumped. Steyn also poetically states that we could survive poor presidents and catastrophies if our population was still filled with doers and not just thinkers stuck in a virtual reality. We have become proud of mediocrity. We go to school longer,have more credentials, and are somehow less educated. All of the presidents who led us to this road of undreaming the American Dream are Yale or Harvard grads. Our greatest president (Lincoln in my opinion) spent 8 months in formal school. Freedom and liberty make us great, not professors. They are just slowly redefining what those words once meant to keep the population numb, ok with being controlled as long as its easy and in line. BREAD AND CIRCUS!! Enjoy the book it's great you will buy a copy for your buddy.

Revealing as always, and Trustworthy History to the Core

This is Classic Mark Steyn, and it is a perfect followup to his earlier book - AMERICA ALONE. You need to read them both, in that order. It is a revealing discourse on the whys and wherefores of the decline of the European Union and, in turn, the United States; and what is left for America to salvage if that is even possible. Steyn is the man to write this story like no one else. His history lessons alone are priceless and not to be missed. THANK YOU, MARK STEYN!

Fantastic follow-up to America Alone

Mark Steyn follows up his last book "America Alone." Again, Steyn does a superb job of outlining the crisis America is in, and the steps we should take to avoid becoming the European disastrous experiment. Many admire the European state as a model for America, but Europe was able to become the highly socialist state because America picked up the tab of defending the moral order in the world. When someone else is paying to protect you, why not offer more "services" to your constituents?

I enjoyed the quote from Justice Marshall that sums up the growth of the federal government. "Industrial power should be decentralized. It should be scattered into many hands so that the fortunes of the people will not be dependent on the whim or caprice, the political prejudices, the emotional stability of a few self-appointed men. The fact that they are not vicious men but respectable and social minded is irrelevant."

This quote from Justice Marshall hits home with the basic understanding of our Constitution and its formulation of "rights."
As Steyn eloquently points out, "rights" as meant by the U.S. constitution is more geared to "negative rights"...."the right to be left alone by the government in respect of your speech, your guns, etc." Nowadays, rights are seen as "rights" to stuff granted by yours truly, the government (but paid for by you).
