Our human psyches possess astonishing resources that wait within us, but we might not even know they exist until we discover how to access them and cultivate their powers, their untapped potentials and depths. Wild Mind identifies these resources — which Bill Plotkin calls the four facets of the Self, or the four dimensions of our innate human wholeness — and also the four sets of fragmented or wounded subpersonalities that form during childhood. Rather than proposing ways to eliminate our subpersonalities (which is not possible) or to beat them into submission, Plotkin describes how to cultivate the four facets of the Self and discover the gifts of our subpersonalities. The key to reclaiming our original wholeness is not merely to suppress psychological symptoms, recover from addictions and trauma, or manage stress but rather to fully embody our multifaceted wild minds, commit ourselves to the largest, soul-infused story we’re capable of living, and serve the greater Earth community.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Bill Plotkin’s Wild Mind ushers in a new era of depth psychology....To study it is to pass through a magical gateway into one’s unique role within the Great Work that Earth is calling us to.”
Brian Thomas Swimme, coauthor with Thomas Berry of The Universe Story

“Here, Bill Plotkin guides us into a landscape where we recognize the extraordinary gifts of our own true nature. Through his Nature-Based Map of the Human Psyche we can find not only our powers of leadership, joy, sensuality, and renewal, but also the dragons of self-deception whose energies we can liberate for the healing of our world.”
Joanna Macy, coauthor of Active Hope

“In
Wild Mind, Bill Plotkin maps the relationship between the human psyche and the rest of nature — a task akin to painting a detailed portrait of a tree in a stiff wind. As in his other books, Plotkin writes with grace, eloquence, and humor. And through this brave effort to capture the wind, he makes an enormous contribution to our species.”
Richard Louv, author of The Nature Principle and Last Child in the Woods

Bill Plotkin, Ph.D., is a depth psychologist, wilderness guide, and agent of cultural evolution. As founder of southwest Colorado’s Animas Valley Institute, he has, since 1980, guided thousands of women and men through nature-based initiatory passages, including a contemporary, Western adaptation of the pan-cultural vision fast. He’s also been a research psychologist (studying nonordinary states of consciousness), professor of psychology, rock musician, and whitewater river guide. In 1979, on a solo winter ascent of an Adirondack mountain, Bill experienced a “call to spiritual adventure,” leading him to abandon academia in search of his true calling. Bill is the author of Soulcraft: Crossing into the Mysteries of Nature and Psyche (an experiential guidebook), Nature and the Human Soul: Cultivating Wholeness and Community in a Fragmented World (a nature-based stage model of human development), and Wild Mind: A Field Guide to the Human Psyche (an ecocentric map of the psyche — for healing, growing whole, and cultural transformation). His doctorate in psychology is from the University of Colorado at Boulder. To learn more about Bill Plotkin and Animas Valley Institute, visit http://www.animas.org

I had to read it twice to truly have it impact me on a personal level. The first reading was intellectual and a bit confusing with the maps of the psyche and the various dimensions. The second passing, I was able to digest it easier (I’m still a bit clueless in some areas).

But the gift of how the author blends story-telling and psychology to make it come alive and for me to truly welcome the unconscious part of me.

I’ve been a therapist for 15 years and the closest this reminds me of it terms of application with healing is IFS (Internal Family Systems). IFS uses the term “protectors” which can be managers or firefighters to protect the vulnerable exiles while Plotkin uses “Loyal soldiers”. Regardless of the terminology, because of Plotkin’s sensuous way with words, it hit me on a deeper emotional level than the clinical books I read on IFS. Both are useful in my work, but the soul aspect of his work is very intriguing and inviting which I can read all day long whereas the clinical stuff with IFS is so clinical I always need breaks.

I’ve decided to invest more time in reading some of his other books so I can learn more.

This book is an astonishment. It is both a coherent, well structured map for use as a guide to make sense of our "ordinary" day to day human complexity while also being a portal to deep imaginings of our paradoxical individual and collective potential in a world full of mysterious possibilities.

There was one chapter which, when I read it, experienced, "Oh my god! How did he get inside me and describe me to myself? I didn't think anyone else knew!" It was astonishing to discover a way of seeing deeper and vital aspects of myself in such a way that I felt acknowledged for their intrinsic value rather than pressure to conform to a more culturally defined norm of how I "should" be in the world. What an enormous relief!

And as a psychotherapist, I am also using this map of the psyche to guide my work. More than other psychological theories, using Plotkin's map of the psyche as a guide helps to bring a sense of moving toward wholeness as a natural developmental progression instead of fixing what's broken. Bringing us toward integration and contribution rather than maintainence and consumption.

Like other reviewers here, I find all of Bill Plotkin's books useful and instructive on a deep level. Wild Mind, in particular, was helpful for identifying my own 'wild mind'. Now when I meet someone, I can quickly identify them and better relate to them/understand them. I highly recommend this book, but also his other books, SoulCraft and Nature and the Human Soul. Thank you, Bill, for sharing your gifts. I met you at a conference in ABQ in 2011 (I think), and was completely blown away with your presentations (along with Fr Richard Rohr), on Nature and the Human Soul Not long after that conference, I was invited to a coffee shop to hear live music in St. Paul, Minnesota, and none other than Cliff Eberhardt was playing.

Eberhardt's duet with Richie Havens, The Long Road, is a song about your soul calling you...when you soul knocks, it's time to start living my friends!

Wild Mind is nourishing and satisfying and so substantial. It is also rich and deep and dense -- a whole lifetime of Bill Plotkin's journeying through nature, and soul, and psyche distilled down to its essence and then shared oh so generously.

I find myself hungry for this kind of perspective and understanding of the world and being human. And, I find that I can only
read a chunk of it at a time because there is so much to absorb and integrate.

This book also makes me want to grow wild, in every possible way, and I would love to participate in the Wild Mind training
program that is offered through the Animas Valley Institute. But, even if I can't do the training program, I have the book now -- something so meaningful, a master work full of real ways to cultivate my wild mind and participate in life's greater story and unfolding.

I have "the Journey of Soul Initiation" by the same author, which I'm still reading. Wow, that book has opened my eyes, and though I have only just started this one I'm told this one is just as good 👍. I highly recommend these books to anyone who wants to heal their deepest soul wounds.

I actually attended a Wild Mind retreat in which we read all of and used many exercises in the book. The personality inventory presented was so comprehensive and the illustrations of the nature of the inner-workings and relationships between the various “subs”was so insightful. I discovered profound connections amongst different aspects of my personality, as well as fears, triggers and strengths I had never fully realized or understood.
Most importantly, the insights provide actual tools to deal with problems and grow into a much more whole, healthy and joyous being. This is good stuff, not silly or fluffy.

What a great idea for a book. And this one definitely has some great points. Very strong start. And here and there, Bill nails, for example, the definition of some aspect of the psyche or how two parts of the psyche interact. That kind of thing.

Unfortunately way too much of it really confusing--not because the various aspects of the psyche are that difficult to understand, but rather, how Bill groups them and structures things was, for me, impossible to follow at times. 4 parts of this, and 3 parts of that, and another 4 of something else? North equals one thing, and south equals another, and we're supposed to keep it all straight. As I took notes in my computer, I spent considerable time simplifying lists.

I also went through the book and crossed out every mention of north, south, etc., other confusing words, some sentences, and the text. As a result, the text came alive again, and was a joy to read. It became much easier to understand. I spent the time doing the editing because the core messages of the book are so valuable, and so many of the insights are just excellent.

Great self development book with a striking map of the psyche, helping understanding our defensive subpersonalities and gives clues to contend them.
I'm now reading Bill Poltkin's "Soulcraft", which is also a great presentation of soul - based work, including dreamwork, in a symbolic perspective.
Great readings, inspiring, setting clarity on our fears and limiting beliefs and behaviors, and great to practice.
