About the Author

The 17th Gyalwang Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje, is the spiritual head of one of the major schools of Tibetan Buddhism. The 900-year-old lineage of Karmapas has included some of Tibet's greatest spiritual masters. Born to nomadic parents in rural Tibet, he was identified while still a young child as the heir to this leadership position. In 2000, the Karmapa's dramatic escape to India from Chinese-ruled Tibet at the age of fourteen propelled him onto the world stage. Since then, he has emerged as an international Buddhist leader and environmental activist, founding Khoryug, a region-wide environmental protection program. The Karmapa has been dubbed the "new face of Tibetan Buddhism," and many Tibetans look to the Karmapa for inspiration in their struggle to preserve their embattled culture. In 2008, he made his historic first visit to America. He currently resides at Gyuto Monastery, near Dharamsala, India.

This book by the spiritual leader of the Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism is very accessible and inspiring. It is a compilation of talks given by the Karmapa to a group of American college students who visited him for several weeks. His gentleness and humor shines through, and at the same time he is very direct and challenging about bringing social responsibility into daily life. He avoids Buddhist jargon and speaks simply but with great depth and compassion. This is a book that I will be re-reading.

I'm not unfamiliar with Buddhism. But I was unfamiliar with the Karmapa, so I was intrigued to read this book. Keep in mind while reading it, that he is with American University Students discussing Buddhism, so much of the talk I was familiar with, and realized that his audience is younger than I am. It was obviously talking to a younger generation, which I didn't mind at all. I liked the points made, and agreed with those things that he emphasised. It was a thoroughly readable book, and quite enjoyable. I find it rewarding and pleasant. I would recommend to anyone who is perhaps just investigating the many rewarding features of Buddhism.

I like how this book is free of jargons, and that Karmapa talked about many modern themes such as our physical appearance, going to the gym and etc. The interdependence is his prevailing idea. and his use of the story of an eagle with two heads is so witty.

While I bow and pay my respect to the Karmapa, I agree with some of the comments about the book, that it does seem a bit superficial. It almost seems that the Karmapa is trying too hard to help the students. I have read many books on similar subjects and was hoping that this book would shed some new lights; and the title is so enticing. But I couldn't finish the book because of the way it is written.

What a brilliant young man the Karmapa is. Whether we think of him as an enlightened living Buddha, or simply a young person thrust into a leadership position, he demonstrates such insight and caring for the entire world in this book. It is clear that he is going to be one of the great leaders for the human race in this new era. And, we are truly blessed to witness it and learn from his wisdom in this book. Developed through conversations he had with American college students, the book offers beautiful nuggets of wisdom for everyone. Very much enjoying it!

The easily accessible, contemporary wisdom brought forth by the 17th Karmapa in this book is quite remarkable. He speaks in plain language, without too much Buddhist jargon, to many of the issues facing us in the present age: our shared earth and its protection, relationships, gender identities, consumerism, greed and food justice. How to live in this world by possibly replacing our own anger and aggression with sustainable compassion. Showing the interconnectedness of everything, his writing helps us to realize that we have to start with ourselves. Well worth reading, contemplating and practicing.

One of the most compelling books of our times, in the voice of His Holiness the 17th Karmapa (like HH the Dalai Lama, the head of his Tibetan lineage), speaking to us as not at a teacher or monk, but as a friend might; not with any technical Buddhist terminology, but from his heart and experience of living his life. The sections on Gender and the reasons for his vegetarian diet are especially worth reading. I will read this book again and again.
