American foreign policy since World War II has actively sought to reshape both domestic and international orders, hoping to hasten the coming of the “end of history” in a peaceful democratic utopia. While the end of the Cold War heightened optimism that this goal was near, American foreign policymakers still face dramatic challenges. In War, Welfare & Democracy, Peter Munson argues that the problems we face today stem from common roots—the modern state system’s struggle to cope with the pressures of market development and sociopolitical modernization. America’s policies seek to treat challenges as varied as insurgency, organized crime, fiscal crises, immigration pressures, authoritarianism, and violations of human rights with a schizophrenic mix of realpolitik and idealism. The ideologies that inform this policy outlook were born during the Great Depression and two world wars and honed during the early years of the Cold War. Although the world has long since changed, American policy has failed to adjust. The crisis of the world’s leading welfare states compounds this inflexibility. By addressing the inequality of wealth, security, and stability brought on by dramatic economic change and modernization, Munson describes how America can lead in reforming the welfare state paradigm and adjust its antiquated policies to best manage the transformation we must face.

About the Author

Peter J. Munson is a Senior Vice President for Preventive Services and Global Crisis Management at Citigroup. He previously served as a Marine officer, retiring in 2013. He deployed on numerous operational and combat tours in the Middle East and holds a master of arts in national security affairs with a concentration in Middle Eastern studies from the Naval Postgraduate School. He is a contributor to numerous journals and blogs and served as the Editor of the Small Wars Journal. Proficient in Arabic, he lived in Muscat, Oman, for a year and traveled the Middle East extensively. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, he currently resides in Tampa, Florida with his family.

An excellent read. Munson mixes his superb analysis, personal experience from his wide travel experiences, and vast amounts of research and reading to craft policy recommendations I can only hope policy makers take to heart.

The book is well written and engaging to read, he does a superb job of putting issues in proper historical context. Don't think this book is only about warfare, he discusses conflict in relation to politics, and economics.

I highly recommend this book, it will make you think, and it will challenge you.

Highly Impressive Work

Peter J. Munson's War, Welfare & Democracy is a highly impressive work which combines history, economics, and even literature and art, to make its case for a wiser American policy at home and abroad. Munson also includes many compelling personal anecdotes -- drawn from his experiences as a U.S. Marine officer and Middle East specialist -- to illustrate his point that the "end-of-history" argument that has propelled much of America's foreign policy in recent years is deeply flawed and in need of reset.

One may not agree with all of Munson's assumptions and prescriptions, but the careful reader will certainly come away from this well-reasoned and well-written work forced to reconsider at least some aspects of his/her accepted notions of foreign and domestic policy.

Peter J. Munson appears to be a soldier/scholar of the highest order, and either he or his book should be sitting at the table alongside Washington's policy elites.

As the Eurozone enters another year of recession and America continues to battle its way to a sluggish "recovery", many people look at the future with a sense of fear. With the seemingly unending wars and economic crises of the past decade it is little wonder that the future looks so grim. The only way to tackle this fear is to understand the root causes of the current state of the world. I can't think of a better way than reading this timely book. Part history, part policy critique, "War, Welfare, & Democracy" is a sweeping look at the world we live in today and how we got here. The author, a military veteran of the Afghan war, offers sound policy prescriptions that must be embraced if America is to prevent a "lost decade" phenomenon that has mired other industrial democracies.
