Editorial Reviews
Review
"Over the years I've found Jim's advice on his blog and other books to be sound, practical, and budget-friendly. This book continues that same down-to-earth tradition and is an enjoyable read. His writing style is pleasant and conversational, even when tackling difficult subjects, such as how deep to bury a corpse!" -- Lisa Bedford, The Survival Mom (TheSurvivalMom.com)
"To take the long view of survival, long term emergency preparedness calls for Prepper's Long-Term Survival Guide by Jim Cobb. It will help you think through and plan how you'll survive long after a catastrophic disaster strikes." -- John Wesley Smith, Destiny Survival (DestinySurvival.com)
"The depth of information that is covered in this book is incredible as is the unique way that the author makes us really think about ideas, situations and resources that are mostly overlooked in the usual short-term survival planning resources. ...This book belongs in the hands of anyone who is concerned with a long-term disruption in society as we know it today. It's practical, common sense approach makes it a valuable asset to all those who wish to not only be prepared, but for those who want to thrive." -- George Romano, Simpler Times Homestead (SimplerTimesHomestead.blogpost.com)
"If you are concerned about long-term survival and want to take it beyond the basic 72 hour kit, then this book is for you." -- Jaime S., Prepared Housewives (Prepared-Housewives.com)
"Jim Cobb is a voice of reason in the preparedness community....If you're looking for good sound advice, check out all of Jim's preparedness books. He's definitely one of the best authors in this field." -- Arthur Bradley, PhD, Author of Handbook to Practical Disaster Preparedness for the Family
"I'm a big fan of Jim's other book, The Prepper's Complete Book of Disaster Readiness. The advice is practical and Jim writes in an easy-to-follow, chattin'-with-a-friend style. Prepper's Long-Term Survival Guide is no different--another good book with good advice from someone you'd probably consider a good friend." -- Julie Sczerbinski, Home Ready Home (HomeReadyHome.com)

I don't usually write book reviews, but I feel like this is important. Book seems to have been written off the top of author's head, from memory. First, it is not "Long Term" survival at all. I have a lot of questions that I am searching for answers to, but there are areas that I am quite knowledgeable and experienced in and I found a number of careless errors in what is written in this book (particularly in food and medicine). This causes me to not trust the author's recommendations in areas I DON'T know about. Also, most information is not detailed enough to be much of any kind of guide for survival. I've seen other reviews complimenting Mr. Cobb on other book(s) he has written-regarding home defense-for the sake of those looking for accurate information for times of emergencies, he needs to stick with what he knows, or do better research before writing books that people might depend on for survival.

Absolute waste of time. This book is literally just a list of things anyone with half a brain would have for a survival situation. The books suggestion for security is to buy a gun, nothing about how to use or maintain it one, the suggestion for collecting water is to store ahead of time or have chemicals to filter it. This book knowledge that anyone who has thought about prepping already possesses, it's nothing but an attempt to get your money, avoid this garbage.

This is what I might call a guide for those completely new to prepping, and aren't particularly suited to the mindset so need a simplified version.
I'm guilty of judging the book by its cover. I was expecting concise (because of its relatively small size), in-depth knowledge on subjects at least of items on the cover, like alternate energy and such. What I got was a basically a summary conclusion on each subject and a recommendation on what other book to read for actual knowledge.
I strongly disagree with several of the conclusions in this book, such as focusing almost completely on getting to stay in your home, the attitude of 'don't bother worrying about storing food for more than a couple months', etc. I'm just not happy about payin for a book that basically gives me someone's opinions along with incorrect data (veg oils do NOT last longer than other types, for one) and tells me what other books to buy.
There's 1 small thing and 1 large thing that, for me, saved it from being a 1 star. First the small thing, the mention of herbs and spices - I think this may be an item that many people forget about, but can make a poor situation go from "surviving" to "doing good". Secondly, the section on entertainment and education - I think this is an oft-overlooked aspect that will actually be very important, and again will affect whether one just survives or thrives.

Not a useful book. Author tells you why you should be prepared but there are not really any how to's. This is not a guide for survival. Not one picture or diagram. Better off with military survival guide

This book has a really attractive cover however, it’s best function in case of an emergency would be using its pages to assist in fire making. Any person with common sense could write this book. Honestly, you would be better off watching World War Z several times as a source to reference for survival. I wasn’t entertained in the least. I bought it used but it’s still a waste of 9 bucks for “Fire Paper”.. Don’t buy.

If you plan on living in the city after a grid-down no-power survival experience, this book is made for you. I, however, will not be waiting around in my apartment in this ghetto neighborhood for somebody to kick my door in while I'm sleeping and I don't have the ability to stand watch 24 hours a day. This book also is very useful if you own a home or are able to beat the vast amount of bums into one after the chaos ensues. It is entirely based upon living around all of the other desperate human beings an everything that comes along with that human nature survival instinct type of situation. Fitting in, trading, cooking, protecting, and all sorts of other very practical methods for making it by. Jim is very, very knowledgeable about surviving in the wake of a catastrophic event. Even if you're like me and plan on being a woodsman, this is a must-read. No matter how you roll the dice, it is a must-read and must-keep. In addition, he provides several referrals to must-read books and resources. Like going on a guided tour and learning how to make use of the wild right outside your front door. I will be doing just that! The main point I think he wants everybody to know is: Do what you can, while you can, before you can't. Again, read this book and take or leave what you will!
Jim: do you have a book about surviving in the woods? I understand your recommendation to avoid gong it alone, but simply cannot stomach the idea of crapping in a bucket in a boarded up house, surrounded by humans in survival mode who are just waiting for the opportunity to kill me and my daughter and take everything we have.... The diseases that people have, ugh just all of it. We are woods people! Always will be. Far far away from others, far far away from help too... Sigh.

Not worth the money

Really disappointed bought this expecting a guide on how to make/build/use survival/prep items and tools instead the book suggests reading other books that tell you how to do things or researching how to do things, it's more of a padded out tick list/to do list. Than a survival guide would not recomend.

Good prepper book if I do say so !

Only received today but had a brief flick through and it is full of useful knowledge. Only downside is that I live in the uk and stocking up on guns and shotguns is difficult - but I have bows and a crossbow and knives if needed and I use them wisely and stay within the law!! My air rifle is quite handy too. It gives good advice for all types of preparation and some medical advice too. Happy I bought the book - you never know what is around the corner and it is always better to be prepared for it.

Good read with some useful nuggets in it for everyone
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 15, 2020Verified Purchase
The mock journal sections at the beginning of each chapter, describing life in the author's post-apocalyptic scenario, are great.
There is lots and lots of really good survival advice in the book.
For those of us of more mature years who've been round the block and not led sheltered lives, 90% of it is just common sense.
However I guarantee anyone reading this will pick up at least a few valuable nuggets of advice.
There's an excellent reading list for "off grid" medical emergencies. Good advice about home defence, and "funneling" intruders to where you can see them, and lots more food for thought.
And it makes a very good read.

If you need to be reminded that you will need basic staples past 72 hours, like food and water, this is the book for you. If you are looking for a book that might actually teach you about acquiring food and water this book is of no use. This book is simply a list of other books one should buy and read.
