About the Author

Jack Kornfield
Jack Kornfield, PhD, trained as a Buddhist monk in Thailand, Burma, and India and has been teaching meditation internationally since 1974. He is one of the key teachers to introduce mindfulness practices to the West. He co-founded the Insight Meditation Society in Barre, Massachusetts and founded the Spirit Rock Center in Woodacre California. He holds a PhD in clinical psychology and has taught in centers and universities worldwide. Jack has led International Buddhist Teacher meetings with the Dalai Lama, worked with many of the great teachers of our time, and is a father and activist. He is co-creator of the Awareness Training Institute and has written more than a dozen books, including Meditation for Beginners; A Path With Heart; After the Ecstasy, the Laundry; and more.

Jon Kabat-Zinn
Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD, is the founder and director of the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center and associate professor of medicine in the Division of Preventative and Behavioral Medicine. His clinic was featured in 1993 in the public television series Healing and the Mind with Bill Moyers. Jon Kabat-Zinn is the author of Wherever You Go, There You Are: Mindfulness Meditation in Everyday Life and Full-Catastrophe Living: Using the Wisdom of Your Body and Mind to Face Stress, Pain and Illness.

My favorite book on mindfulness. If I am stressed or overly emotional, as soon as I start reading this I immediately calm down and center, remembering who I am and what's important. If you understand that we have a duel nature, physical and spiritual, seen and unseen, temporary and eternal, this book is for you.

Jack Kornfield's words are an inspiration. This particular book is among his best. So sad that the Kindle version seems to be filled with errors that make reading it difficult. I have not let that stop me--what he says is beautiful and helpful. But there are places where I am almost forced to figure out what he is saying. I hope the paper version has been better edited.

Warm understanding voice

I feel as if Jack Kornfield is a warm friend who's giving me spiritual support, as he sits by my side telling me wise words of Buddha, along with anecdotes to illustrate his thoughts. I bought the book actually for my daughter who's going through hard times. But reading Jack's words are so supportive and sensible, that I will treasure this little book for years to come.

In a brief form he brings Buddhism alive. I have re-read his THE WISE HEART three times, as a teaching of Buddhism. This LAMP IN THE DARKNESS is just that...a brilliant focus on the path one follows.

Thank you, Jack, for the inspiration. I'd love to see you in person, your warm character right alongside.

CD does not work would not play at all.

The CD that accompanied the book does not work a real bummer. Thought I would read the book 1st then try the meditation CD so by the time I finished the book and tried the CD the return timeline has passed by a few days
Very disappointed.

Almost every person I know has had a loss of some kind. This book and DVD not only help process through the stages of grief it aids in making one a person better able to be prepared for the events of just living. It is a book that will be read often because it is so uplifting. If a person is feeling even slightly depressed a few minutes with this book will change a sad day into a hopeful day at the very least. I will keep this book in my reference library and know I will continue to read it many times.

Healing from the Death of my Husband

This book--and even more so the recorded guided meditations-- has provided the healing words I have needed to navigate the death of the love of my life. The meditations on compassion and forgiveness have been particularly helpful. Even though my husband and I did a very good job of keeping up with our relationship issues--I have still had feelings of failure to process. Kornfield's words and voice have sped up my healing process enormously. A quick warning...the Kindle version does not have the recording and to me, the recording is 90% of the package. I ended up buying both the book with the recording and the Kindle version.

I saw Dr. Kornfield at a conference on meditation. His talk was life-changing. I got this book because it comes with a CD of some of his best meditations. I use them in my work as a psychologist and my clients love them too! The writing in the book is beautiful and the book is perfect when your soul needs soothing.
