About the author

Julia’s love for food started at a young age when she spent summers at the cottage with her grandparents, watching them grow fruits and vegetables and raise chickens. She was born in Russia and moved to Canada when she was a teenager. Her love for baking led Julia to embark on a year-long journey to complete a Bakery Arts evening program at George Brown College and receive a Bakery Arts Certificate.
After a few years of scribbling recipes on post-its and loose sheets of paper, Julia started her website, Imagelicious, where she began writing down her favorite recipes along with some memories, stories and notes. Cooking and baking turned into a passion, which in turn sparked a love of photography. Now, Julia’s photographs can be found on the menu of a few Toronto restaurants.
Julia lives in Toronto with her husband and adorable daughter.

A photo for each recipe.
Love it!
All recipes are simple but look great!
Every recipe in this book has a gorgeous, large full color photo of the finished dish as well as easy to read recipes with a separate ingredient list. Every recipe can be tweaked to your own taste too- if you don’t like broccoli, you can use another vegetable like cauliflower, or skip the spicier spices or use more or less to your taste. Recipe’s like One Pan Chicken With Rice And Peas are simple and wonderfully delicious and cook in 45 minutes, and for seafood lovers, Roasted Shrimp With Feta And Broccoli cook in only 15 minutes. You’ll need about 2 hours to cook a perfect Leg Of Lamb that will melt in your mouth or a gorgeous roast beef.
There are side dishes that are pure heaven- like Roasted Brussel Sprouts With Apples and Bacon and also a super moist Applesauce Cornbread. One of my favorites is a simple Addictive Garlic Cheese Toasts- baked on parchment paper leaves no sticky cheese messes! Her desserts are simply scrumptious from cobblers to stuffed fruits and an out of this world Strawberry Slab Cake. Her favorite kitchen tool is a good thermometer. One of my favorite things I learned in this cookbook is how to make hard boiled eggs in the oven! They come out perfect! From Breakfast to Desserts, there is a recipe for everyone in this beautiful cookbook and all of them can be tweaked to your own tastes! To Julia Konovalova- 5 STARS.
The pages are thick and the binding is sturdy, allowing the book to be opened flat without the pages flopping over. Every recipe is accompanied by a full color picture, which I always find to be a really nice feature. The introduction gives a good explanation of the author’s philosophy of oven cooking and discusses changing the recipes according to your own taste. I’m one of those people who cooks well but needs a recipe to follow, almost to a T, so it’s nice to have this discussion laid out for me. In addition, each recipe includes an explanation of how it was developed or why it works so well, which can also give ideas of what you can or may want to change. Oh, and the index is wonderful! You can look up almost any ingredient and get a list of recipes that use it! I get so frustrated when I can’t find things in an index, or all I get when I look up, for example, kale, is “see Greens.”
I’ve only made a couple things so far, but they were easy and worked as presented. And they were tasty! I’ll be putting this cookbook into my regular rotation.
I started with the Hoisin Maple-Glazed Salmon - photo herewith -- and my whole family loved it. The easy sauce was absolutely addictive and I admit that I doubled the recipe so that I could have extra to drizzle over the veggies, which were perfectly cooked.
The Cheesy Onion Chicken Breasts with Broccoli is savory and delicious. Her recipe actually inspired me to play with other spice combos including cumin and chipotle seasonings to have more of a Southwestern variation.
Julia has a whole section of oven-baked breakfasts. I haven't tried them yet, but the ones that are intriguing to me are the Millet Porridge with Cranberries and Oven Baked Maple-Sriracha Bacon
This cookbook is a great mix of simple and inventive. I enjoyed reading about her Russian heritage and seeing how it influences her cooking and tastes... For instance, I'd never heard of baked milk before but her description of the end result "thicker than regular milk, like cream, slightly sweet with an almost caramel taste" now I simply have to try it...

I will be coming back this cookbook to purchase as gifts. The author is cooking school trained and has worked in the industry for years. She approaches cooking with a practical and time saving mindset. She used basic ingredients (mostly, depends on where you live a little), tells you when it makes sense to splurge, offers ways to build your kitchen, pantry staples and her recipes are full of flavour, stories and no nonsense advice. If you want to cook well, with food close to home, buy it. A great guide for people getting into the kitchen for the first time. Also a great guide for people of all ages who are working all day, tired and just hoping to put healthy food on the table and move away from takeout. So great.
This one other dish introduced a flavour combo that's becoming my favourite! It's a strata recipe that combines blue cheese, pears and walnuts. Really simple to make, yet resulting in a gourmet-like taste that I now crave for days.
I still have to cook more things out of this book, but with every recipe I look into I get pretty excited about it. The ingredients are easy to come by, which is important for me as my grocery trips are always on speed-timer.
The last but not least thing that I enjoyed in this book are the photos. Really high quality and well done. You can see well what the dish should look like.
Lots of the meals are hearty. So I think this is going on my Christmas gifts list as well.
