The Maine Woods Paperback – March 16, 2014

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 163 ratings

Over the course of three years, Henry David Thoreau made three trips into the widely unexplored woods of Maine, taking notes constantly, acutely observing the rivers, the lakes, the mountains, the animals, and stars, he also told of nights sitting by campfires, of meeting men who communicated by writing on the trunks of trees. Here Thoreau captures a lesser known, wild side of America, while simultaneously revealing his own courageous spirit.

The book follows Thoreau and companions on a foot and canoe trek from the Boston area to the wilds of early 19th Century Maine. It's invaluable reading for those interested in the history of outdoors living in the earlier days of our country, as well as the folkways of the settlers in those areas.

I think this Thoreau guy has a good chance of becoming widely-read.

I love reading the works of Thoreau, it’s like being right there as he travels the early Maine woods, one can just imagine the beauty of nature as he describes it.

After reading Walden last year, I wanted to read more by Henry David Thoreau. This was my next writing by him and I enjoyed it immensely. Written by a highly intelligent author, in a time when one could still hire Indian guides to lead you into massive wildernesses, largely unspoiled. I very enjoyable and essential book for anyone who likes Walden, or otherwise just likes Thoreau.

I travelled to Maine this past summer and was keen to find out more about its history and the people who lived there. Its inhabitants are proud of their woodcutting and naval past, of this Thoreau talks about, the Kaadn mountain ,Millinocket , Penoboscott river on which we were on a fun white river rafting adventure as tourists but it was the only way he could travel. The language is rather slow and it is a book to ponder on and enjoy slowly.

Thoreau takes the reader on a wonderful journey through the largely uninhabited forests of Maine. It is clear that Thoreau is a botanist. He is continually identifying trees and plants by Botanical as well as Common name. He also identifies the birds he encounters. Sadly the Maine woods were not pristine at the time of Thoreau's journeys. There were scars of loggers, who mainly came for pine trees, along Thoreau's entire route. His journeys also include a hired Indian and Thoreau has recorded Indian names for lakes, rivers, plants and such. Judging by this book, Thoreau has not a lick of humor, so don't expect a laugh. Bits of Thoreau's philosphy are strewn throughout, it's a shame he didn't elaborate. Many measurements were made in "rods" which I have yet to figure out how many feet one rod is. I was a bit surprised to find his journeys were made by canoe, with quite many portages. All in all, this is a great book and I highly recommend it.

I chose this edition thinking that Penguin is a world famous publisher — surely they would produce a fine book with clear and legible printed pages. Unfortunately that is not the case. Do yourself a favor and buy a good used older edition of this book— made when people still knew how to print and bind a long lasting, well made book. This edition is not worth spending money on.

Henry Thoreau's accounts of his three trips to the Maine woods still stands up as a first class account of how to travel lightly in Maine: up and down the rivers and streams by canoe or bateau, over the very difficult portages, across large lakes in search of their connections to other waterways; how to set up camp and spend the night; how to fish and hunt for moose and dine in the woods using whatever is at hand; all the while appreciating the beauty and biological value that he sees and documents for our benefit. Should be read and read again, for the richness his travelogues contain, and as the value of his writing increases.

These trips taken before the Civil War, Thoreau makes the journey that people dream of today. He had to be one of the first conservationists, noting that killing animals indiscrimenatly and over-harvesting the forest was a bad thing. Yet even back then he recounts seeing these practices being done. It was fun to follow his trail on the Gazetteer, and find the names of the rivers and lakes that the Indians had given them.

Excellent condition, good read from a true lover of nature. Great cover and the subject matter is perfect for a fellow
writer who spent time in the Maine woods in the mid 50's of last century. The writing style and vocabulary of a
man like Thoreau from the mid 1800's has to be taken into consideration as the great contrast to 2017 writing. Yet
if you love nature it is a good read and gives one a perspective on how the forests were disappearing to the loggers
both in Maine and Michigan during this time period. This Thoreau understood and lamented on as we all do to-day.

2.0 out of 5 stars The size of the book and print is terrible

This review does not pertain to the content of the book itself, just the physical appearance of the book. The book is large but super skinny with tiny tiny print....That would be why the price was so cheap. Never again
