A good sampling of Benjamin's writings

The above 2009 Penguin Classics edition is translated by J. A. Underwood and has an introduction by Amit Chaudhuri. Benjamin's writings are as listed in the above book description. I found Chaudhuri's introduction only partially helpful, but of course the value of this book is Benjamin's writings.
Prospective readers may want to know that a book was previously published in London in 1979 by Harcourt Brace with the same title and author. The 1979 London book contained several of the same Benjamin writings as the above Penguin book, but not all of the above Penguin writings, and the London book does have a few other writings which are not in the Penguin book. The London book writings were translated by Edmund Jephcott and Kingsley Shorter. The London book contains an introduction by Susan Sontag and an informative publisher's note.
I do not see a great deal of difference in the Benjamin translations, per se, however the Susan Sontag introduction and the publisher's note in the London book are well worth reading (they can be found online).
Buyers may want to confirm which book they are ordering.

This is an atrocious new translation of these essays. Translating Benjamin is of course an extraordinary challenge, but this attempt is clunky, labored, and, scandalously inaccurate. How ironic that "Task of the Translator" appears here.

If a translator's gonna get it that wrong, he could at least do it will some style.

"Stick no bills" (p. 69), seriously?

An intoxicating walk through the urban streets of early 20th century Paris. This is a prime example of Benjamin's 'literary montage' technique. The small snippets of prose point towards Baudelaire's innovative prose poems of the mid-nineteenth century. A joy to read. Funny, whimsical, beautiful, chaotic, imaginative.
