Although providing an excellent history of Van Diemen's Land in Australia

Post modernism is a philosophy that believes there are no facts, only interpretations, and no objective truths, only the perspectives of various individuals and groups. There can be many “facts” created by different groups about the same point that are all equally valid. Also as our society and politics evolves these facts will change and the changed facts will be just as valid. This philosophy rejects rationality, reason, and progress through the accumulation of knowledge.

Post modernist historians dominate the field of aboriginal history in Australia. Their history has been fabricated to meet their own political narative. Windschuttle takes their history apart peice by peice using conventional facts not fabricated "post-modernists facts". Although providing an excellent history of Van Diemen's Land in Australia, the book is more about history being destroyed and the demise of professionalism in tertiary education in the Western World.

Masterpiece - best book on Australian History since World War II

Windschuttle got it right. He did not miss a trick in his archival research and found fresh material that had eluded L.Ryan, who offered extreme estimates of the death toll among indigenous people after settlement that this new work totally refutes. At the very start of his book he tackles the subject of a recently invented massacre story,one of many such lies doing the rounds down in OZ. Ten false massacre stories have been identified in just one State alone. In the land down under a high proportion of books about the country's indigenous history focus on victimhood.

Unpleasant issues of 'noble savage' culture such as chronic feuding and cannibalism are for the most part airbrushed out of the picture. Windschuttle does not shrink from discussing the more brutal and debased aspects of aboriginal Tasmanians in the last part of his book. Josephine Flood discussed unpleasant matters more widely in her work 'The Original Australians', but for some reason she has never been subjected to the disgusting lies, insults and slander suffered by Windschuttle.

For Pete's sake, one public description of him fell over the line into anti-Semitism. But he is not Jewish. Readers in the States should perhaps be aware that political anti-Semitism is becoming common among trendy-lefty types down under, notably at tertiary institutions. Am speaking from first-hand experience and observation.

It is interesting that only one specialised book has appeared on aboriginal cannibalism, and unexpectly a copy is available on Amazon.com ('Anthropophagitism in the Antipodes', by James Cooke. A pen name - I do not blame the writer for using one).

Windschuttle believes in reasonable discussion and debate. A good man, an honest man and a superb scholar - but he over-estimated the integrity of his numerous critics and underestimated their fanaticism and malice.

Windschuttle exposes where ideology trumps fact

A very eye-opening review of the historical evidence for alleged atrocities committed by white... settlers against Tasmanian Aborigines. Rather than viewing the Natives as little better than animals, the English at the time were influenced by humanitarian Evangelicalism and Enlightenment values which emphasized the unity and equality of mankind. These values had just prevailed in abolishing the English slave-trade.

Windschuttle combs thru the original sources and concludes that about 118 Natives were killed by whites--hardly genocide. The ancient Tasmanians were very suscepible to colds and the flu which decimated their numbers. Also the women on Robinson's Flinders Island community failed to breed, probably due to STD induced sterility as a result of widespread prostitution that was encouraged by their husbands and fathers.

I plan to read the rebuttal Whitewash but it will have to be GOOD to answer Windschuttle's claims. Every Tasmanian should read this controversial book.

Hooray for Winschuttle

I haven't finished reading it but I am convinced of the validity of his scholarship, his scientific method, his research and his exposure of lack of the above in various other publications.
I am, for instance, after reading this, totally convinced that the then Governor General's 2001 apology to the Kija people was an apology for something that clearly never happened and that people of that standing in positions such as that make errors of that magnitude shocks me, frightens me and boggles my mind.
Against that background the ravings of those reviewers attempting to accuse Winschuttle of being a Holocaust Denyer or somesuch are merely pitiful and evidence of just how far this 'non-thinking' paradigm that led the GG astray extends.
Winschuttle lays it all out for you to check for yourself. He does not engage in mud slinging, abuse, hysteria. He simply lifts a rock, which any of us could have perhaps lifted for ourselves, and exposes the rottenness beneath. This book is a must-read. And Winschuttle's logical, systematic, thorough, unbiased, scientific approach is something we should all try to copy.

Maverick History like Creationism is Maverick Science

There's little to say really. This is not a work of History but a polemical, vituperative assault on the whole of mainstream History in Australia. Like any good 'intelligent design' worker Windschuttle employs the strategy of finding some cracks in the narrative of previous Historians and relatively isolated errors in their use of sources and builds a cathedral of counterknowledge on these fissures. The book is apalling and an embarrassment to the country - it is telling that he couldn't get a proper publisher to touch this reeking pile of racist bigotry with a bargepole but had to self publish. Of course the reactionary forces in the country have taken it upon themselves to elevate him and this twaddle in order to suit their narrow political goals of wedge politics and appealing to xenophobia and ignorance. So instead of sinking out of sight it has been discussed and cited in the sleazy Murdochian press by his flying monkeys again and again. It is a running sore in Australian civic culture.
