Faeries And Other Fantastical Folk: The Faery Paintings of Maxine Gadd Hardcover – February 28, 2006

4.9 4.9 out of 5 stars 35 ratings

A breathtaking showcase of Maxine Gadd’s whimsical, colorful fairy paintings. Her highly detailed work has appeared before in anthologies, but this is the first book dedicated to Gadd alone—and it’s exquisitely produced, bound in rich red cloth and with matte art paper, padded front board, and gilt edges on the pages. What a treat for fans of fantasy art, who have already turned other titles on fairies into bestsellers: very few painters have managed to capture this unseen world so completely. Looking at the pictures—sometimes shimmering, sometimes eerie—you can practically hear boughs creak, leaves rustle, small wings flurry, and voices chatter in a tongue unknown to mortals. Commentary by the ever-popular John Grant, aimed at “believers,” enhances the images.

I didn't get this book on Amazon I got it from SFBC when SFBC "Science Fiction Book Club" started I own two editions of the same book one completely sealed and one open this book is beautiful, for anyone in you life that has a love of the Fae this is a wonderful tribute to them. no matter how crazy it sounds very well done by the author and 111 page the cover is soft red velvet and embossed with gold lettering the edges of the pages top side and bottom are all gold leafed. this is a very nice book don't buy it for your 5 year old kid. buy it for someone that respects books.

Let me start by saying that the presentation of the book itself is gorgeous. The sides of the pages are gilt, the binding tight and the photography lush and glossy. This is a book that I can easily say would make a great gift. I would like to say that as an advisory there is some nudity in the book, so I would not recommend this for really small kids.

I wasn't all that familiar with Maxine Gadd's paintings, but seeing that I had every other fairy artist's book I wanted to expand my collection. I'm open to all types of art, so I decided to go ahead and purchase this book. I wasn't disappointed in any way. The book is full of reproductions of the artist's work and is accompanied by various poetry. I am not all too fond of poetry in general and I wish that instead of poetry there was actual information about the artist. That was the only thing this book was lacking-- real background information on the artist.

There is a very nice range of art inside of this book anywhere from vampire lovers to faery queens. I also love how all of the paintings look different. I know a lot of artists are guilty of using the same pose or character in several paintings, but not Maxine Gadd. Overall very beautiful book that I would recommend to any faery lover of all ages who enjoy beautiful, lush artwork. I provided a video that quickly flips through my copy of the book to show what one can expect to see inside.

If you love beautiful depictions of Fairys and Mermaids and other magical creatures you have to have this book! It is not that expensive and 85 % of the pages are absolutely stunning! This book is composed almost entirely of paintings and sketches, so if you are looking for a story you will be disappointed. However, whenever I look for Fairy books I search for ones that are artistically done. So if you are very particular about how Fairys are presented, like I am, you HAVE to get this book now!

This is truly an amazing, delightful, fantastical book! I love Maxine Gadd's work; I couldn't wait to buy this book, and I have not been disappointed!

Even the few of the paintings that are obviously not as 'finished' or detailed as her usual work are truly magical, nonetheless.

This is one book that will find a seat of honor among my Fantasy/Faerie Tale collection!

I cannot find a thing wrong here; if you are looking to spend your money on any book of this type, look no further...this is IT!!!

The illustrations are beautiful. The book arrived on time. Unfortunately, there is a big smudge on the front of the binding of the book so it is not in perfect condition for a new and unused edition. I am disappointed with the imperfection as the book itself is so gorgous. However, the last attempt to order this book a month ago from another company was a fruitless endeavor as they failed to send me a copy. Now that I finally have one, I am not willing to part with it whether there is disappointing smudge or not.

I purchased the other book "Faery Stone" in the same series, which is beautiful and this book is equally as beautiful as the other one. Beautifully illustrated with lovely stories. They both feed my passion for the love and belief I have in fairies that was instilled in me, from a very early stage by my loving grandmother.

After receiving a card with Maxine Gadd's artwork on it I was so taken with her style I had to see if there was a book of her artwork, What an incredibly gorgeous book. I could not be happier. It's magical.
