Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) was an exceptionally prolific and versatile writer. As a student, he composed pastoral plays in the style of the waning Rococo. With "Götz von Berlichingen", a drama conceived in the spirit of Shakespeare, he joined the avant-garde 'Storm and Stress' authors. When he was twenty-five, he wrote the epistolary novel Sorrows of Young Werther, eliciting fervent responses among those who rejected the traditions of the Enlightenment. In his tragedy "Faust", which evolved over a sixty-year period, he created a prototype of the Romantic hero. His lyric poetry has been translated into many languages. As minister of state in the Duchy of Sachsen-Weimar he dealt with financial, ecological, and cultural issues. A scientist active in various fields, including botany and the theory of colors, he pondered aspects of evolution well before Darwin. Based on his studies in literary theory he developed a concept of 'world literature' that he hoped would foster communication among writers of different nations. Among his early admirers in England and America were Lord Byron, Thomas Carlyle, Joseph Cogswell, and Ralph Waldo Emerson.

He edited a paperback selection of Goethe's works in 45 volumes, and has published extensively in the fields of Comparative Literature and Germanic Studies. He taught in the United States for thirty years, most recently at Indiana University.

This volume provides a good overview of Goethe's life and writings. It put most of his work in focus based on the context of the times in which he lived. Boerner does a good job of providing this focus without over glorification of Goethe or avoiding the "human" aspects of Goethe's life. I read this volume early in my 5 year stay in Weimar, Germany, and afterward found that I knew as much or more about the "legend of Classic Germany literature" than some natives. Boerner interests the reader and instills a curiosity to explore the details behind the "legend".

This short and fast-to-read biography touches on what one needs to know about Goethe's amazing life. I'd known he was a poet and writer, but he was also a scientist and philosopher. The author did a good job of putting his life into historical context. I'm glad I found this little gem after I visited Goethe's home in Weimar.

This is a delightful and well-presented short account that covers the essentials of the life of the writer, poet, scientist, and man of the world. At the end is are eleven pages on Faust, the work that took him over sixty years, right up to just before his death, as if it had all been timed. There are also twelve brief testimonies written about him since. It is astonishing to think that his life spanned the turbulent times of the Seven Years War and two French revolutions. A description of his meeting with Napoleon is included.
