Jim Henson, Frank Oz and Brian Froud's groundbreaking movie The Dark Crystal has been my favorite film of all time since I saw it on opening day December 17, 1982. I was thirteen years old. Ahead of its time (then and still today), The Dark Crystal is a film of staggering artistic vision and achievement. It created a live-action world inhabited only by strange and compelling creatures, with not a human to be seen. Before computer-generated imagery an entire fantastic culture and its populations were imagined and forged into reality by the hands of a team of extraordinary artists under the guidance of geniuses Jim Henson and co-creators Frank Oz and Brian Froud.

The Dark Crystal is a unique film, and its legacy is timeless. All of us in that theater back in 1982 had never seen anything like it, although its influence since then is widely visible. James Cameron's Avatar is among the most recent films that owe The Dark Crystal a debt. Although not a resounding success when first released, The Dark Crystal's audience has grown over the years into a thriving community of fans.

As we wait, wonder and debate if a sequel will ever be made (or even should be made) an unexpected treasure has fallen into our hands. The Dark Crystal: Creation Myths Volume I is the exciting first part of a trilogy of graphic novels that tells the story of what happened before the events depicted in the film. With dynamic, beautiful artwork and an involving, compelling story by a team led by original conceptual designer Brian Froud and comprised of Brian Holguin, Alex Sheikman, Lizzy John and Deron Bennett, Creation Myths is a stunning work of imagination worthy of its inspiration that deepens and expands the story we know and love so well.

Aughra, beloved curmudgeon and Keeper of Secrets, tells the tale of the planet Thra long before the time of Jen and Kira, and describes how the arrival of the urSkeks, beings from another dimension, changed everything when they came to Thra in search of redemption.

The second part of this prequel trilogy, The Dark Crystal: Creation Myths Volume II, is scheduled for release on December 11, 2012. I can't wait.

The Dark Crystal: Creation Myths is some of the best graphic novel art I have seen! If you’ve ever seen Jim Henson’s movie The Dark Crystal and loved it as much as I did as a child then I’m sure you’re going to love these graphic novels! The art is inspired by Brian Froud’s illustrations and is so spot on with the artistic style of the movie. But this isn’t the storyline from the movie it is the PREQUEL! And who is our star this time but Aughra! Ever wonder where her missing eye went? Well now you can find out. The storyline jumps around a bit in this first volume – from Aughra, her son and some wondering Song gatherer gelfling but I suspect there is a reason for that. If you’re a fan you should definitely give it a peek. It even has a few full page text pages within the volume that tell more of the story which is not a normal thing in a graphic novel.

I’m off to dive into volume 2!

This is a great piece of art made by the same person who made designs for the movie! Brian Froud. Love his very artistic and talented work. I have grown to really getting into this world of Thra. And before this book, I had no idea of how old Aughra really was, and that she had ever had a son. But who was the father?

Aughra's son was really curious to know about his father when an Urskek told him that he saw some other parent in him. Hence, he had never known him. But usually every creature that's born from the mother had to have a father too. Even if they never see them.

This has some of the most great pieces of art that I have ever seen! But I can't wait for the next one too! I really want to see the Skeksis/urRu split.

One of my favorite movies as a child was The Dark Crystal. I loved the fantasy of it. The puppetry was done beautifully and the the world created was so amazing. Not only that, but the story was so compelling. The polars of good and evil were shown as being two sides of the same being. The mythology of the movie was just so interesting.

These graphic novels are all about the mythology of the world seen in The Dark Crystal. The first volume starts with a creation myth and continues from there. Characters and creatures from the movie make appearances, revealing more of their true identities. Aughra was always a mystery in the film and her story is explained within this volume.

The stories are told by a traveler gathered around a campfire at night. The first volume encompasses the stories he told the first night, before the suns rose again. Some of the myths are delivered in visual comic book form, while others are short two-page stories. I read the whole volume in one sitting, but I imagine it would be a nice read each night before bed.

I give this graphic novel a 4/5. I highly recommend it to any fan of The Dark Crystal. This would make a perfect gift for any Jim Henson enthusiast. I am excited to read the second volume.

Dark Crystal was always one of my favorite fantasy movies and it's nice to finally see some more backstory being developed - albeit 30 years after the movie came out. The comic medium seems to fit the franchise well. Dark Crystal was always a very visual story and the comic is able to show the world and beauty of Thra. And the artwork is really amazing. Aughra looks like Aughra and the Gelflings look like Gelflings. Even more importantly, the story enhances the mystery and epic nature of the film. The book starts at the beginning of creation and gets at the puzzle of why the urSkeks were banished to Thra. It's a fun story - really a set of tales - and I can't wait to see how it gets resolved in volumes II and III.

Wow just wow. This book is really good I love the way it takes the story. I wanted more of the story from the Dark Crystal movie so I got this book and was I amazed. This explains the Dark Crystal from the beginning of it all. Can't wait for the new one to come out. Wish they make another Dark Crystal film.

I just received this book and have to say WOW. It is MUCH higher quality than I thought it would be. It has a beautiful hardback cover and is a wonderfully illustrated graphic novel in full glossy colour inside with beautiful drawings. What a GREAT prequal story. I have to say that I am really impressed with this and will definitely look out and order book two. I am a massive fan of the Dark Crystal - and this is a great collectors item that ties in with the original movie. I hope that more of these are released. Amazing.

This book is well worth the current price. From the beautiful cover design to the artwork within this is a must have for any fans of the Dark Crystal. In volume 1 a great deal of background history of established characters is revealed such as Aughra. I can't wait to pick up volume 2 & hopefully vol 3 won't be too far behind.
