"Frightening and enraging, but ultimately inspiring." - Pete Hegseth, Fox & Friends
A SACRED DUTY is the true story of Paula Pedene, a visually impaired, decorated Navy veteran who was instrumental in exposing the corrupt leadership at the Veterans Administration hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. Hoping for a return to integrity, instead the new administration retaliated by stripping her of her position in public affairs and consigning her to the basement to work as a librarian.
The reprisal included a "30-day investigation" into bogus misconduct charges that stretched into more than eighteen months. Psychologically crippled by the attacks - and battling financial ruin, ruthless superiors, a skeptical media, and her two sons' emotional crises - Pedene fought back, refusing to surrender to a system that was stacked against her.
Working alongside a bulldog congressional investigator, an ornery VA doctor, and a husband who believed in her, Pedene became a central figure in exposing a conspiracy that rocked the nation, killed hundreds of veterans, provoked nationwide outrage, and ultimately brought down the Secretary of Veterans Affairs.
Pedene's memoir is a classic David vs. Goliath tale - one woman who loves her country and the veterans she serves against the government bureaucrats determined to silence her at any cost.

About the author

What would you do if you learned your bosses were illegally making veterans wait for their VA health care, causing some veterans to die? Paula Pedene, a decorated U.S. Navy Veteran with military service during both the Cold War and Operation Desert Storm, fought diligently to stop them. When she discovered management's unethical practices of keeping a false waiting list at the Phoenix VA, she raised numerous concerns internally to senior leaders, the VA's Office of the Inspector General, and others that fell on deaf ears. Risking her career, she reached out to a tenacious VA doctor whose care for veterans spanned decades, and they worked together to expose the national VA Wait Time Scandal. Before the news of the scandal was over, the Secretary of Veterans Affairs resigned, Pedene's disclosures were verified, and she obtained a settlement from VA, winning her whistleblower case. She went on to help advocate for laws to further community care for veterans, improving their health care access so they wouldn't wait for VA health care again. Her book "A Sacred Duty" is a first-person account of her whistleblower journey and her spiritual, physical, and emotional challenges. The book earned first-place honors in the national Book Pipeline Competition in 2018 and was considered the best book for adaptation to a screenplay or film. In 2021 her book won first place in the national Skyrocket Press competition. To find out more about Paula, please visit her website at www.PaulaPedene.com.

I tracked Paula down, and while she was not really able to tell me anything—she was STILL loyal to her country—I knew something was very wrong. The Phoenix VA had become known among the advocacy community for its outrageous and sickening wait times, something I witnessed first hand when a loved one had to battle for his care there, often waiting hours in his casts to be seen.
Paula was incredibly grateful for a friend, and as I read this book, it became very clear why. I never knew the depth of her mistreatment and resilience until I read A Sacred Duty. I know a little something about challenging authority (I had to fight for a test that ended up saving my life), and this is a must read for anyone who needs a dose of courage, bravery, and inspiration.
1. I know first hand how tough of an environment swimming against the tide in government bureaucracy can be.
2. I know Paula personally - we were high school friends. We met for lunch one day after l ran into her while I was at the VA on business. It was while she was exiled at work. I could tell she was struggling with something, but she never whined. She stayed tough, and professional. That alone was inspiring. What Paula was doing was fighting a battle in behalf of all federal employees, in and out of uniform, and she was doing it single handedly, alone, and without the help or support of the over 2 million civil servants for whom she shouldered the burden.
I wish I would have better understood what she was really going through, and I feel ashamed that I wasn’t a better friend. If you consider yourself a leader, this is a must read.
