This is definitely not a get rich quick book, and if anyone is thinking of starting a bakery or other small business they should remember that, as Jonathan says in the introduction, a good number of bakeries fail in the first year. This book is an excellent place to start your research before you decide to take the risk of starting a business
While the title is misleading, a price of just 99 cents should quite sufficiently state that this is not a "complete guide to starting a bakery business. That combination of facts, though, does not warrant a one or two star review.
In these 34 pages the author has demonstrated a solid thought process for any aspiring entrepreneur to get an inkling of the business that is, in my experience, one of the very few pursuits that can be successfully started on a shoestring budget and a great deal of blood, sweat and tears, and actual make a living with beginning in year one.
I hasten to add, the less money you have, the more hard work and determination you will need, to be certain. But you can earn enough to survive that all important first and second year. At least I did. Years three, four and five each were reasonably profitable and my hours reduced to an average of 70 per week in year five.
While this introduction is well written and well edited, it is, alas, far too short to ever be considered more than a first level introduction to the craft.
I doubt a complete book would be possible at less than several hundred pages. But, for less than a dollar, this is superior to several others be priced at three to five bucks.
I sincerely hope the author will pen a series of books on this issue. Each booklet could be voted to detailing the outline provided by each chapter of this intro. That would total five or six booklets. Then add books for the several different enterprises suitable for a bakery (donuts, pastries, espresso, breakfast meals, etc.) and now you have a good beginning that should be marketable AND useful.
Well, I'm sure somebody will see my point and fill the need. Until then, How to Start a Bakery Business is a good inspiration for anyone contemplating immersion into the craft and a great, if back-breaking, way of life.
I rate this at a solid four stars.
The only downside was there wasn't any information on how to price your goods, either for retail or wholesale. Fortunately that was the ONLY downside.
I'd love to see a revised version of this book with pricing information. It was a great read!
Don't make the same mistake I made: spend your money on a proper book instead -if you find a good one our there...
