Small businesses are the backbone of the U.S. economy. They are the biggest job creators and offer a path to the American Dream. But for many, it is difficult to get the capital they need to operate and succeed. In the Great Recession, access to capital for small businesses froze, and in the aftermath, many community banks shuttered their doors and other lenders that had weathered the storm turned to more profitable avenues. For years after the financial crisis, the outlook for many small businesses was bleak. But then a new dawn of financial technology, or “fintech,” emerged.

Beginning in 2010, new fintech entrepreneurs recognized the gaps in the small business lending market and revolutionized the customer experience for small business owners. Instead of Xeroxing a pile of paperwork and waiting weeks for an answer, small businesses filled out applications online and heard back within hours, sometimes even minutes. Banks scrambled to catch up. Technology companies like Amazon, PayPal, and Square entered the market, and new possibilities for even more transformative products and services began to appear.

In Fintech, Small Business & the American Dream, former U.S. Small Business Administrator and Senior Fellow at Harvard Business School, Karen G. Mills, focuses on the needs of small businesses for capital and how technology will transform the small business lending market. This is a market that has been plagued by frictions: it is hard for a lender to figure out which small businesses are creditworthy, and borrowers often don’t know how much money or what kind of loan they need. New streams of data have the power to illuminate the opaque nature of a small business’s finances, making it easier for them to weather bumpy cash flows and providing more transparency to potential lenders.

Mills charts how fintech has changed and will continue to change small business lending, and how financial innovation and wise regulation can restore apath to the American Dream. An ambitious book grappling with the broad significance of small business to the economy, the historical role of credit markets, the dynamics of innovation cycles, and the policy implications for regulation, Fintech, Small Business & the American Dream is relevant to bankers, fintech investors, and regulators; in fact, to anyone who is interested in the future of small business in America.

Mills takes on the significance of small business to the U.S. economy in a way that few, if any, have done before. She lays the groundwork for understanding the transformation that technology is driving by first categorizing the different types of small businesses and their scale within the U.S. economy. She establishes why small businesses are credit dependent and how their vitality is inseparable from their cash flow. And, through the lens of the Great Recession -- from her vantage point in President Obama's Cabinet -- she reminds readers just what happens when small businesses are cut off from their lifeline of credit ("1.8 million small business jobs lost in the first quarter of 2009"). From this foundation, Mills takes on the challenges and opportunities of fintech innovation that is changing not just lending, but also nearly every aspect of a small business owner's daily life. With AI driving a better understanding of business cycles for the owner and the credit provider alike, Mills predicts a "utopia" where credit and cash flow are seamless inputs, making individual small businesses less vulnerable to economic ups and downs. And, ultimately, she contemplates, that if attained, that reality will ensure greater economic stability and opportunity not just for small business owners, but also for the one-half of America's workforce small businesses support.

This is a truly riveting book about how technology, AI, and big data can deal with some of the key frictions and barriers in small business lending and access to capital. Mills paints a vivid picture of why small businesses matter in America and how all of the players in the financial services sphere can win the market, while also helping the businesses that constitute the fabric of our communities thrive and succeed.

A few weeks ago, I saw Bloomberg's Tom Keene dub this as the "nerd-alert beach read of the summer" and I totally agree. It's an incredibly smooth read for such an academic and technical subject -- I highly recommend it to those interested in fintech, the future of banking, and the role of small business in America.

This is a well-documented, easily understandable offering that is useful for students, business owners, bankers, customers, and anybody else interested in making sense of what the future holds for small businesses in the United States. The information resounds with expertise and credibility and the narratives are heartwarming and persuasive.
There is much unknown about the future of financial regulation, technology, and government oversight as they pertain to small business and the possibility of "small business utopia" as discussed in this slim yet weighty book. What is known is that this book is a worthy guide for all of us concerned with the health of small business and the future of the American. dream.

I've worked in the space for a while and wanted some more insights into the big picture. I'm pleasantly surprised by this book, I really didn't know if I would like it as I've read quite a few articles and textbook passages on the matter. If you care to know about how fintech came about, how they are developing, what company you should start next, how banks are playing a role, how adaptable your business should be, how small business can be your next gig and more, grab a copy.

This book artfully illustrates why small businesses matter to the U.S. economy and how technology promises to help them access the capital they need - both through banks, Fintechs and Big Tech companies. Mills takes the reader on a journey through the economic theory underpinning the innovation boom occurring in fintech, while also sharing her experiences in Washington as the head of the SBA and illuminating how the regulatory system must change to accommodate this inevitable technological revolution. A thought-provoking read, highly recommend!

Insightful in telling the story of small business lending and how the banking world for the reason of small margins has not serviced the small business world well. This book explores how fin tech is changing the banking world for small business and introduces a couple of possible looks into the future.
