- Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2021This review is for Hamburger Hill from 1987. War is hell. That's what my grandfather always used to tell me. He fought in WWII and was shot in the back during combat. He lived with a bullet in his back because it was too close to the spine for them to operate. My step-dad served in the Korean war. My biological dad was a lieutenant in the Marines and served in Vietnam, which is where this movie takes place. Lots of killing in this one with limbs being blown off and intestines hanging out. Again, war is hell so this is what you'd expect when watching a movie like this. I've been missing my grandfather and used to love watching the old war movies with him back in the day. This one was a little tough to watch because it actually made me feel like I was there fighting alongside these guys. I could've done without the racial tension but it is what it is. I think the actors all did an awesome job! The movie stars Dylan McDermott as Sgt. Adam Frantz. You might remember him from The Practice, Law & Order SVU, Steel Magnolias or a ton of other shows / movies. The movie also stars Courtney Vance as Spc. Abraham "Doc" Johnson. Vance played starred in Law & Order Criminal Intent, The Hunt for Red October and a bunch of other things also. If you enjoy seeing war movies and especially ones about Vietnam then give this one a try. I thought it was a really good one. I don't want to give anything away and spoil it for you. Just watch it! Hope this helps and have a great and blessed day! :)
- Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2010I have read many reviews from those of you that weren't there and you totally miss the point of this movie. If you want a faery tale based on the fantasys of Oliver Stone and Stanley Kubrick, then that is your choice. This movie; however, is light years ahead in reality compared to any other movie of the Vietnam War.
The story is a salute to the American fighting man and his willingness to gain objectives. Few people know that there were 44 provinces in South Vietnam and that the 4 provinces that comprised I Corps accounted for 44% of all US casualties. It really was a different war there although actions in '65 thru '67 in the Central Highlands were just as fierce and challenging. The Ashau Valley was conqured, with great sacrifice, in 1968 and 1969 by The Marines, The 1st Cav and by my proud unit the 101st Airborne.
I was there in operation Somerset Plain in August 1968. I was on the lower levels of Hamburger Hill when we backed off and let the Air Force Bomb Hanburger Hill for 24 consecutive hours. When we entered the valley, both sides were lined for miles with 37MM and 51 cal anti-aircraft guns. Out of 50 Slick Hueys and 26 supporting gunships, 15 of the choppers were shot down before we touched down on the valley floor. That mission was doomed from the start. A Company 2/502 was hit by an Air Force National Guard F100 that dropped a 500# bomb directly on their position killing 15 of my Brothers and wounding 55. Due to casualties in the war a standard company of 200 men could not get replacements fast enough to field more than 100 men. We spent 19 days on the west ridge of the valley before pulling out.
My unit B Co. 2/502 is the Strike Force unit of the 13th Valley fame. However, the two major engagements Hamburger Hill and Ripcord were both fought by the 3rd Brigade of the 101st. Hats off to the 3rd Brigade and all who served in Vietnam. Most I Corp grunt units were like mine taking 1 in 4 killed and 50% wounded every year. If you were in the mountains, Hamburger Hill was your story, any other movie is a faery tale..
- Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2021Why was the Vietnam War so much more hated than subsequent wars? Probably because the cause was so much less direct than 9/11: it was never very clear why we were in Vietnam. (Korea was a pretty remote cause too: but then those were different times.)
And the draft inflamed passions while the college deferment gave a 4 year safe-space in which to act out. (The movie went into that a lot.)
When I returned from Vietnam in the summer of 1970, I did not run into much anti-soldier hate initially. (Eventually, I did some in college.)
If a war is not important enough to call up the reserves, have civilians make sacrifices, and require interruption of college in order to serve, then it is not important enough to ask people do die.
Some of the reviews complain that the movie was cliched and simplistic: well, warriors are just not usually ironic existential philosophers--and living or dying is really quite simple. The "complaint" about all realistic war movies (like this and "We Were Soldiers") comes down to this: it is realistic.
