Great album and intro to Soundgarden, my only gripe is that it is so hard to find on CD. The tape is fairly common, but to find on disc is ridiculous. I luckily found a used copy for about ten bucks from a seller in England, and am ecstatic to hear it. Chris Cornel tears up each track with his powerful vocals, and where the instrumentals are not as refined as later albums, this is definitely worth a listen for grunge/alternative music fans such as myself, and for Soundgarden fans like myself, more specifically. Beyond the Wheel and Nazi Driver are my favorite tracks on here, with the former being one of my favorite Soundgarden songs entirely. Get it if you can find it, it is worth it!

I love Soundgarden! although i don't think this album is as good as the others, it still is a treat for the ears. Soundgarden themselves say this album wasn't as good as they wanted it to be because their producer didn't know the Seattle scene that much. I think this is a good album for any Soundgarden fan.

Although universally labelled as "grunge" or "alternative rock," Soundgarden have always had a heart of metal. Not hard as steel, nor soft as gold. No, Soundgarden have always bent the rules of rock just enough to innovate, but not so much that they come off as gratuitous, artsy experimentalists. Their debut album is a surprisingly confident, solid offering that really showcases all the strengths (and perhaps weaknesses) of the then-blooming "Seattle Sound."

Ultramega's opener, "Flower," begins with the soft, moody fluttering of Kim Thayil's strings (supposedly being blown on while in Drop-D tuning). Then, a single chiming chord gives birth to a pulsating riff that simultaneously pays tribute to psychedelia, early metal, and punk rock music. Chris sings about a young woman who lived life too excessively, a withering "Flower" that soon burns out. It's also the only single from the album. "All Your Lies" kicks off with a much faster guitar riff that slows down just enough during the chorus to give the listener a dark yin/yang contrast. "Beyond the Wheel" is perhaps the heaviest song in the band's catalog, and that's really saying something. Rhythmically minimalistic, but nonetheless impressive, this song effectively showcases Cornell's astounding vocal range and Kim Thayil's menacing guitar skills. Other great tracks include the bipolar "Mood For Trouble," the hilarious "Circle of Power" (featuring bassist Hiro Yamamoto screeching like a crazed hillbilly who just found out that the local Walmart just got closed down), and the wonderfully bluesy "Incessant Mace," which is blatantly inspired by Led Zeppelin. There are a few filler tracks on this album, such as the duo "665/667," which are satires of "Satanic" messages supposedly found in many metal records. They are supposed to be funny, but they come off as pointless and cheesy.

In conclusion, Ultramega OK is a strong start to a grunge band that survived the death of Kurt Cobain, the deterioration of their own genre into mindless copycats, and their own personal implosion in 1997. I recommend this mainly to hardcore fans of Soundgarden, while pointing the casual listeners to the direction of their 1994 masterpiece Superunknown.

Probably one of the most underrated under appreciated albums ever. If you don't own this already, you should. Buy it, love it then go see Soundgarden live. Hearing them rumble through Flower and listening to Cornell slay Beyond the Wheel will make you appreciate this album even more.

5.0 out of 5 stars pure young grunge rage
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 21, 2015
this is dirty punk metal hendrix sabbath grunge at his young age of pure rage... loads of talent + invention spilling concrete - bleeding melting sound from your speaker while a volcan lava explode filling yo brain with barking coyotes flying all over in thousands and squashing against your head walls.... cornell throwing razors inside black doors, the rhithm section solid as asphalt trace the road while and kim tahil posh a crazy drugster while he is at his free anarco best, sounding it was '69 but gone rotten. typical wild power of some first releases of some bands, my favourite with no doubt remains the never stop listening superunknwon, one of the best album of rock in those years around, the mature allround grounge rock reach also great songwriting joining levity wth heavy, things here they do not even care of, mostly is abstraction on sound trough the use of songs... but this is a geat unique album, I love it so much, they are one my favourite group of all ninenties much more than nirvana, pearl jam, no other grunger could get so much power loudness a sharpness togethere loke soundgarden... considered a great band but for me very underrated... some more album at the right time (as we can join the 3 great audioslave albums. but I'll never comprehend how cornell could be such a crap in his solo albums, million miles far away from when he is an band, and always the good right ones, no mistakes) and 4 me they should be in R'N'R hall of fame, togehter with Clash... but they both are too extreme in being out-anti system... what else can I say... it's like paranoid of the sabbaths had taken fire thanks to hendrix on stage with his guitar and the legacy of the heaviest and strangest not ortodox punk and post-punk rocks keeps them together that enough not to crumble around.
