- Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2007V. Wilson's review above is so entertaining that it's tempting not to add another word. "Rapturous overkill" indeed. But I wonder if Messiaen's monstrously long, lush, and clangorous Turangalila throws anybody off nowadays? I heard it in Carnegie Hall with the Philadelphia Orch. under Eschenbach, and nobody stirred a hair, not even a silver-gray hair. There are multiple choices among recordings, with a super-virtuosic one from Kent Nagano and the Berlin Phil. topping my personal list.
But I must admit that Chung's approach is more approachable: it manages the feat of being light on its feet, even jaunty when caled for, and the score's gaudy weirdness feels like a fresh new language instead, shorn of aimless exoticism. The hushed mystical sectins sound more genuine than I remember. As a result, Turangalila comes more sharply into focus, and Chung's musicians give it a distinctly Parisian suaveness and delicacy, along with real elan. I'd rank this CD very high among all the available recordings.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2014This is an amazing composition very well orchestrated by Chung and the Orchestra of the Bastille Opera.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2022I'd just listened to a lecture on the composer and this symphony. I appreciate it all the more now that I can hear the whole thing.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2015Challenging--but worth the effort
- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2001I really expected to be impressed by this recording, particularly after reading the blurb from Messiaen that he considered this to be the definitive performance. The performance may well be, but the recording, unfortunately, is not. It sounds very muddy and has nowhere near the dynamic brilliance of the version by the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Essa-Pekka Salonen. I only wish it could be re-recorded (or, at least, remastered)to bring some life it.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2008One thing to keep in mind is that Messiaen has never really been the composer of easy listening. When listening to this piece, keep that in mind. His music is complex in its harmonies and its structures. This piece, written for piano and ondes Martenot soloists and orchestra, is a love song, as stated by the composer. You definitely get the feel for that as time progresses. The instrumentation is lush, and it is gorgeous. This recording is a great find because, not only was Messiaen present for the recording (stating that they recorded it almost exactly to his specifications), but the piano soloist is none other than the composer's wife and the one who premiered this work many years prior, Yvonne Loriod. You can feel the experience in her playing, as with the ondes soloist, Jeanne Loriod (Yvonne's sister). Though she is not the original soloist, she became such not too long after the work premiered, and is considered the leading scholar on this bizarre instrument. It adds a mystical quality to an already abstract work. A word of warning: you may fall in love with this odd instrument and want to learn to play (like I did), only to find it is not made anymore. Oh well. At least bask in the glory of this fine work, and enjoy one of Messiaen's most beloved works, sure to make your day.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2004This recording of the Turangalila Symphonie, which bears Messiaen's imprimatur, surely rests with the finest achievements of the century. The work is one of astonishing complexity, more akin to a fantastic piano concerto or showcase for the ondes martenot than a symphony. Cast into ten movements, the work seeks to portray, in Messiaen's own words, "[an] all at once love song, hymn to joy, time, movement, rhythm, life, and death." Widely touted as his seminal work, the symphony comes to life in this vivid and electrifying reading by Myung-Whun Chung. The recording is less perfect than others, but retains the fire and excitement of the piece faithfully. The ondes martenot, in particular, sounds mellow and soft, rather than strong and commanding. Despite some minor flaws, the reading is amazing, and, being recorded in Messiaen's presence, with his wife and sister-in-law on the piano and ondes martenot, it gives us a definitive account of what Messiaen himself would have wanted us to hear. The work bursts with life and energy, as befits a piece whose title can be loosely translated from the Sanskrit as meaning "speed of life." This particular disc has received wide accolades from several reputable sources, including "The Rough Guide to Classical Music" and "The Penguin Guide." As an advocate of 20th century music, I consider this piece and this reading essential. The two negative reviews on this site are disappointing in their ignorance, and I sincerely hope you won't let them steer you away from this beautiful and amazing work!

Gérard BEGNIReviewed in France on January 11, 20175.0 out of 5 stars La Turangalila symphonie de Messiean excelemment interprétée par Myung-Whun Chung

hpReviewed in Japan on July 12, 20185.0 out of 5 stars

HenriReviewed in France on October 11, 20164.0 out of 5 stars Turangalila-Symphonie interprétation Myung-Mhun-Chung
Mr. Mark A. MeldonReviewed in the United Kingdom on January 14, 20122.0 out of 5 stars Myung-Whun Chung's Turangalîla-Symphonie - not a first choice
This CD was the first in a whole series Deutsche Grammophon recorded with Myung-Whun Chung and the Orchestre de l'Opéra Bastille from 1991 onwards; a commendable enterprise that produced some excellent recordings. This one, alas, is not one of them for two main reasons.
Firstly, I think Chung is too laid back and cautious and, although his timings of several of the individual sections of this now almost mainstream work are similar to competing recordings, there is not enough drive to the piece as a whole. Everything tends to blur into a formless mass. Chung's approach is certainly a valid one, if you like that sort of thing, and Messiaen was at the recording (just goes to show that this is no guarantee of success?), but the performance is a disappointing one.
Secondly, the recording is pretty terrible, made in a resonant, boomy, acoustic which tends to lose several threads in this complex work all at the same time. Back in the 1990s, Deutsche Grammophon became microphone-crazy and some recordings made back then were more than disappointing; this, alas, is one of the worst.
There are many excellent recordings of the Turangalîla-Symphony available, and I would recommend Ozawa Messiaen - Turangalîla Symphony on RCA, Nagano on Teldec/Warner Messiaen : Turangalila Symphony, the excellent Wit on Naxos Olivier Messiaen: Turangalîla Symphony; L'ascension, or, especially, Rattle on EMI Messiaen: Turangalila Symphony - Quatour pour la fin du temps (GEMINI) as much better choices than this one!
