The pain of a protracted legal battle with his former manager and the release of being allowed to record again after a three-year layoff are equally apparent from the piercing hard rock and harsh lyrical content of Darkness on the Edge of Town. Betrayal and hard work that comes to naught are the primary subjects on his mind here, evidenced by songs such as "Adam Raised a Cain," "Factory," and "Streets of Fire." Way overdue, what an album!

This was the first album by the Boss that I listened to when I was around 11 years old, all thanks to my cousins that live in Jersey.
At first I had no real interest in the music, but as they drove me around the city streets "Candy's Room" came on the stereo. They put all the windows down, cranked the stereo & floored the car... It was like an adrenaline rush times 100 ( may as well have been how fast they were driving too) All my senses blew up..
After that all I wanted was to be "Candy"... At that young of an age I really didn't understand the whole song
but I figured this "Candy" had to be one really cool girl to have a song named after her..
From that time on, my cousins would make sure that every summer I'd stay with them at our cottage by the lake & they would play all the "cool" music for me.
Not having a sister or older sibling, those where some of the best months of my life. They taught me a lot about music and made sure I understood that just because it wasn't "new" music or played on the radio didn't mean it wasn't good and were the right!
Thanks to them and all my older cousins both male and female I was very blessed. With no girls my age I was pretty much a tom boy yet had no clue that I was, until I was a teenager & someone mentioned it..My cousins that lived near me and close to my age were all mostly boys.

I never realized how much versatility I had with music until my Father pointed it out one day on my way to school.
Back then he thought it was ridiculous that I'd know the words to every song on the radio yet not know the band or normally listen to their music.
It would be "our thing" every morning.. He'd always say "Well, I sure hope you know all the answers to your tests like you do the words to those songs or.. " After that I made sure my grades were always what he wanted/expected just so I could get a new album or have control of the stereo every morning..
It was worth it! Some of the best memories involve music in some way & I can't imagine my life without those memories..

Probably one of Springsteen's most underrated album. The best songs are definitely "Badlands," "The Promised Land," "Racing in the Street," and "Prove It All Night," although my favorite is the searing "Adam Raised a Cain." I'm more into the instrumental side of music, so this is one of my favorite albums due to the nice guitarwork on "Badlands," "Streets of Fire," and especially "Prove It All Night" and "Adam Raised a Cain." "Racing in the Street" and "Darkness on the Edge of Town" are both soft, chilling songs that you really have to listen to to enjoy. My least favorites are "Factory" and "Streets of Fire," but those are some other people's favorites so don't let my view change your opinions. Overall great quality music and great for the Springsteen fan who's still getting into his music (I'd recommend listening to Born to Run and Born in the U.S.A. (in that order) first).

One of the few great explorations of the complicated, defiant and self-destructive impulses of the American male soul--that is not sexist, self-congratulatory junk. Sequenced with the care of a novel--the first five songs ask troubling questions about men and their relationship to woman, cars, adolescence, their parents and their own ambitions; the final five songs offer thorny resolutions that feel triumphant and even more troubling--this is a landmark in American pop culture. It can be only compared to other perfect works by other flagellant males exorcising the demons of their souls and this country: The Wild Bunch, Blood Meridian, Sabbath's Theater, Raging Bull, Network and Blow Out.

You don't often see this. Usually when an artist posts that masterpiece release, the critics hail it to the heavens, but the fans consider it a dud. I don't believe I've ever seen reviews from the fans that consitently praise a magnificent album in the manner in which this production has been received. It actually holds a special place for me, because I was from the same area and era, and the man was a well known part of the whole Jersey Shore scene. My '69 Firebird was sprung from it's cage and roared down Highway 9 on a regular basis.

Here's where I draw a unique parallel. He had dreamed of escaping all the stuff he used to sing about, and he succeeded. The rest of us, were going to go on to live the life he so perfectly describes throughout this album. He went on to become a mega star, but I listened to that "Factory" whistle blow for 5 years while drudging my way through '... the work, the work, just the working life'. I always dreamed that Lisa would meet me at '.. a spot 'neath Abrahm's Bridge' in the "Darkness On The Edge of Town". Maybe '..she's waiting for me out in the parking lot, of the 7-11 store', and we colud do some 'Racin' In The Streets'. I guess all of our 'pretty little dreams are torn'. Did I mention that the man is a master lyricist?

Let's put this back on target! I read a few reviews that claim this might be the greatest rock album of all time, and I gotta say that I would never venture out that far. But if you ask me how many stars it gets, the number five is going to come out of my mouth without hesitation! By far, my favorite Springsteen album, and probaly the pinnacle of his life and his career.

I should add this point. Many people are complaining about the quality of the recording itself. I only bought this as a 'hard copy' backup in my library. I listen to a CD that I cut on audio equipment, using a turntable with a magnetic cartridge, from a pristine vinyl copy, so I get top-notch sound out of mine.

The Boss' follow up to Born to Run. It punches hard, and exhibits his mastery over the rock art form. This album has a contrived though majestic sweep to it. One thing that is never mentioned is Bruce's guitar playing, which is spiritually passionate and his own voice, and is on full display here. Springsteen has the gifted ability to evoke a multitude of powerful emotions from his listeners, more so than any other rock and roller, past or present. Anthem after anthem.
