Alice in Chains vocalist Layne Staley teams with Seattle pals Mike McCready (Pearl Jam) and Barrett Martin (Screaming Trees) in the tradition of other part-time grunge aggregations like Brad and Hater. These 10 numbers--mostly somber, acoustic-hued ballads like the single "River of Deceit"--are a therapeutic soul-cleansing for the troubled Staley. Core fans of any of the aforementioned bands will rank this with the solo work of Screaming Tree frontman Mark Lanegan (a guest vocalist here). --Jeff Bateman

Sounds Stellar Dynamically... but is Noisy Vinyl
Mad Season was a “SuperGroup”originally founded by Mike McCready; lead guitarist of PearlJam,and JohnBakerSanders Bass guitar,Standing Bass of “The WalkAbouts”who actually first met @ a drug rehab in Minneapolis, after treatment they both headed back to Seattle and recruited BarrettMartin on Drums and Alice in Chains’ lead singer Layne Staley to form “TheGacyBunch”,thankfully changed their name to MadSeason , (there is a story behind both band names so look it up if interested)anyway this album “ABOVE” went Gold in the U.S.and would be the only album EVER recorded by the band because Layne Staley died4/5/02,and John Baker Sanders died 1/15/99, both men died from Heroin OverDoses unfortunately but they left behind an album that is just Beautifully Crafted by 4 professional musicians who weren’t afraid to take musical chances and really push the boundaries of a music genre to at times have developed a new genre all by itself I mean we have a combination of grunge guitar/ jyrics with a blue sax bongos that goes very well together this album is mind blowing good I bought the Limited Edition Gatefold Music on Vinyl version imported from the Netherlands and to be perfectly honest I have cleaned this album multiple times , I have a decent turntable and audio system... but this pressing is very noisy with snaps , crackles and pops and from Music on Vinyls reputation , this should not be the case dynamically this album is Stellar and the highs are extremely clear , the middle are also crystal but all the dead wax is noisy as hell , this is not a deal breaker at least you can rest assure that this pressing came from its original analog source not from digital or cd or it wouldn’t have these flaws , You must buy this album

Close your eyes and be transported by Laynes voice back to the 90s, much better place to be than the current horror show.

I ordered this cd to fill out an order and get free shipping. Needless to say I was intrigued by a lineup that includes Layne Staley, Mike McCready and Mark Lanigan. Great music if you follow any of these guys!

Mad season is a killer superband. If you’re here then you already know this… This is the gatefold MOV release and it’s a really great quality pressing! Very quiet on the quiet parts. Bonus songs too. Get it!!!

It sounds beautiful. absolutely beautiful. What more needs to be said? (The only complaint is with the cover art. I wish that the cover art was the full size of the cover. I know it's a weird gripe, but I really love that picture and I wish it was more prominent.) It comes with 4 previously unreleased songs as well. I thought that was pretty cool, considering everyone who's heard this album's only real complaint is that they didn't release more material.

I tell you people I forgot just how good this album really was. Back when it first came out I had not purchased a CD player (young and didn't save money very efficiently) so I had this on cassette. Fast forward almost 20 odd years and I now have 600 CD players strung through two houses and a multitude of vehicles (an exageration of course) I happen upon it on Amazon and think to myself, yeah, I think that was good if memory serves me. So I buy it and I can say that with out a doubt this is a great little album.

The thing is that it lacks some of the "polish" of certain studio recordings but those little nuances make this more of a boutique album from the late great "Nineties Seattle Sludge" that was grunge.
River of Decepit tells a tale for what I am sure is a page torn right from the book of Layne Staley's short and ultimately tragic life. He was a fantastic singer and songwriter. He knew just how to captivate his audience. His lyrics were like "Junkie Poetry" Don't get me wrong, I don't condone the lifestyle or the self destructiveness that usually accompanies being a junkie and their lives are far from poetic but he seemed to almost be telling cautionary tales of woe because he was living it right then and there.

This album, for Layne, is a somewhat softer side and tonealy different from his Alice In Chains offerings. Let's not forget that Mike McCready (of Pearl Jam fame)Barrett Martin (Screaming Trees)and John Baker Saunders (The Walkabouts) were the other major driving forces behind this album. That's quite a pedigree to have on one album. I guess I always loved the comradery that the Seattle bands seemed to have with one another and they all seemed happy for their contemporaries successes.
The first 5 songs are in my opinion the best. Only 5 you say, well think of it like this, how many musicians would kill for 5 hit songs on one album? I tell you how many . . . All of them.

Wake up - The sting of a love affair gone sour, X-ray Mind - The slow burn of distrust, River of Decepit - I believe it is self decepit, I'm Above - a great punk vibe, Artificial Red - a Slow blues fueled A** Kicker
You'll likely never hear much music like this again and sadly two of the four men here are dead, due to heavy drug use and the overdoses that accompanied both of their last trips. R. I. P. Layne and J.B. and if you liked ninties grunge, here you go, in a very pure form from 4 vastly different influences "Mad Season" ABOVE.

5.0 out of 5 stars Obra de arte de Layne Staley

Ecoutez "River of deceit", du grand art !
