Product description
NEW Combo BLUWAVS CD and FLAC FILE
Amazon.com
The Seattle band once notable for its arena rock anthems is now remarkable mostly for its hushed melodies. On Pearl Jam's fifth album, the rockers seem slapdash ("Do the Evolution", "Brain of J"), and the arty experiments sound self-conscious (especially the 67-second knockoff, "-"). That leaves the ballads, especially the lovely lilt of "Low Light" and the clear-eyed lament of "Wishlist." On the latter song, Ed Vedder (as he now calls himself) yearns to be many different things, from a neutron bomb to a souvenir key chain. However, the line that sticks out is, "I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me." Instead of considering himself lucky to be a rock star, Vedder sounds relieved to have moved beyond it. --Keith Moerer
Review
Loud, fast and percussive, Yield finds Pearl Jam veering from its usual mix of gnashing guitars and down-in-the-mouth vocals.... The band seems to have discovered both humor and harmony.... Yield sounds at moments like a bunch of musicians having fun, a pursuit the angry young men of yore seldom indulge in.... -- People

- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2024My favorite Pearl Jam Album. Solid from start to end. If you don't know already then buy it.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2021It's easy to just say the album is awesome. Pearl Jam had found their sound, knew their strengths and knew how to make an album. That said this album to me is just a massive creative flex. The songs have a strength and just a power to them. "Given to Fly" will still make me punch the air and I'm old and it's not pretty. The record itself is sonically great. A voice like Eddie Vedder's has a lot of subtleties to go with the whole Walls of Jericho thing and this vinyl catches it all. Oh, and did I mention...FREE STICKER!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2024Lots of good songs.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2013The last 2 albums Pearl Jam has put out, "Backspacer" and "Lightning Bolt" have made me a PJ fan, so I'm looking into earlier stuff. While this album from '99 has a different sound overall, repeated listening reveals the solid backbone of inspiration and musical directions that has driven this group over it's impressive long career. There may be a couple of tunes that aren't as strong as the album as a whole, but I think there's some outstanding stuff on this cd. I think this material stands up well beside their newer albums, and some of these older albums can be had quite cheaply through Amazon.
As listeners move more to the MP3 format they also move away from the cd packaging that is a great format for talented visual artists and photographers, and provides interesting information regarding production of a given album, guest musicians, etc. This cd has a nicely designed sleeve that includes a beautiful booklet of lyrics and photography. Classy.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2003The more I listen to this album, the more I love it. I'd gotten caught up just listening to PJ live stuff, but I got back to some of the studio albums and fell in love with this all over again. Pilate and Push Me Pull Me used to both get on my nerves, but after really listening to what's going on in those songs, I've come to appreciate them as well.
I like listening to CD's in the car. And when a good song comes on, I'll turn it up. And turn it back down a little when a not-so-good song comes on. It's hard to listen to Yield in the car b/c I just want to turn it up for every new song.
Absolutely an amazing album and, in my opinion, Pearl Jam's finest. (With Riot Act coming in a close second) If you don't have it, you've got to get it... then watch Single Video Theory.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2011YIELD was widely hailed at the time as a "return to form" after the diversity of NO CODE. But this is all nonsense. Yes, it opens with a fast rocker, "The Brain of J," but YIELD is just as diverse as NO CODE, it doesn't rock harder, and it's certainly not a return to the grunge sound.
The most notable song here is no doubt "Given to Fly," a favorite of Pearl Jam fans that uses surfing as a powerful metaphor. "Do the Evolution" is a unique and quite sarcastic song that includes a passage sung falsetto like a church choir, mocking the hypocritical morality of the Bible-thumpers. "MFC" and "In Hiding" are two of my favorite Pearl Jam songs, the first an excellent rocker about driving that makes great driving music, and the second another one of Vedder's great ballads. "Low Light" is an excellent low-key song. "Faithfull" and "Wishlist" are solid numbers too.
For me the weak tracks are "Pilate," a song Jeff Ament wrote about his dog, the untitled hippie chant that follows "Do the Evolution" and the last two numbers -- "Push Me, Pull Me" and "All These Yesterdays."
I think on balance YIELD might be slightly better than NO CODE, but they're similar in their stylistic diversity, and similar in that they are both mainly quite good but with a few weak tracks.
YIELD did not win back all the TEN fans that had lost interest, and it was the last Pearl Jam album to go platinum. From here on, the band would forge their own way, increasingly remote from their initial fame and overexposure. And their next album, BINAURAL, would be one of their absolute best.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2019Although it is my favorite Pearl Jam record, I'll admit there's room for debate. There's not really a bad track on this album, though Push Me Pull Me is less than stellar. Given to Fly and Wishlist are up there with PJ's finest songs of all time. It's also cool to know how democratic the process was among the band in writing and recording Yield. Definitely a must-have, good for beginners or PJ faithful.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2014This is one of the more collaborative albums in that Gossard and Ament are equally responsible for lyrics this time around w EV. This album has the favorites Given to Fly and Wishlist and the awesome Do the Evolution...such satirical, perfect EV ("I'm a thief...I'm a liar...there's my church, I sing in the choir") ..love it, along with Gossards rhythm. Hoo! Some of my favorite lyrical work done on this album. Fun and sometimes in your face, which is why we love PJ. I didnt care much for the experimental Push Me... but easy to forgive because the rest of the album is just so FINE.

koppagureReviewed in Japan on August 25, 20165.0 out of 5 stars

murph41Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 10, 20205.0 out of 5 stars Up there with their best
Like many of a similar vintage to me I’m now enjoying buying vinyl to replace downloads that replaced cd’s that replaced vinyl in the first place...still the best format!
Anyway, Yield is one of my favourite PJ albums, up there with their first three classics imo. Brain of J, Do the Evolution and MFC are great rockers but it’s the quality of the other songs that make it. Given to Fly is an absolute anthem whilst In Hiding, Faithful, Wishlist and Low light are all gems. Perhaps fewer experiments than on Vitalogy and No Code (Push me, Pull me, Red Bar aside) but just a great collection of songs.
