The Apex Of Her Career

Joni Mitchells career started as simple and pure folk music. She grew through each recording adding musicians and expanding her sound. The period from For the Roses through Hejira is incredible. The music is haunting and full. The addition of horns is blended in and flows perfectly. Some songs are simple and some more complex. The songwriting, singing, musicianship and production is outstanding. This cd is 5 stars +.

Excellent Album with excellent reviews. This is a wonderful album and one of my favorites (I have every one of her albums). Mellow, transcendent!

As much as I enjoy compact Disks, it was frustrating to try to see on the insert who played on this album along with Ms. Mitchell. They are not included in any place easy to read so I just wanted to add there names for those interested. More than three musicians were involved making this album but I don't see them listed anywhere here so I've included them.
Joni Mitchell — vocals, guitars, electric guitars
Larry Carlton — electric guitar on "Amelia," "A Strange Boy," and "Black Crow"; acoustic guitar on "Blue Motel Room"

A masterpiece, reissued. Top shelf.

In the early 70's while I was spinning my Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull and Frank Zappa records, I was also innoculated, immersed in Joni's music courtesy of my two sisters, who seemed to play nothing else. I liked her, of course, but I wasn't blown down. Until this record came out. Forty years later I still don't own many Joni albums, but this wonderful record remains one of my favorite albums of the seventies.

Joni Mitchell's most ethereal and haunting melodies. Some of her best songs ever. An album full of masterpieces. And the new 180 gram remastered pressing by Chris Bellman is absolutely fantastic.

A grim trip through the swinging 70s

Joni Mitchell had been moving toward jazz for some time, and on Hejira she took the plunge. Actually, this is more like fusion, with Joni singing mostly with bass, guitar, and drums. This is also a grim chronicle of a musician on the road. Mitchell seemed to want someone to commit to her and at the same time to be footloose and fancy free. She sounds alienated and bitter in most if the sings, even comparing herself to a crow in one sing and a womanizer to a coyote in another. The effect is somewhat similar to Neil Young's Tonight's The Night or Bob Dylan's Blood On The Tracks and Time Out Of Mind. I will give Hejira 4 stars, but it is not a fun listen.

As Good As "Blue"

I resisted buying this album for a long time because of its reputation for being a "difficult" album to get to know. And in some ways this is true. But boy did I miss something special. This is a gem, at least as good as "Blue", Joni's album that shows up most often on greatest albums lists. Be aware... this is not like "Blue" musically. The songs are more open, more freeform and unconventional. They are just as sharply focussed but the song structure is less conventional. Repeated listening rewards with moving lyrics and infectious melodies that simply cannot be dislodged from your consciousness. Joni's voice is smooth, both detached and engaging, and in complete control. She is at the top of her game musically too; inventive, unorthodox, shimmeringly beautiful and superbly played. Just be prepared to give it time to grow.

Twas watching Trujillo's doc: Jaco and at the Joni part, paused the doc to go directly to Amazon and download this remarkable album that I've neglected getting all these years. Jaco's contribution is Hejira. I cannot imagine anyone else playing bass for this music...not even Larry Klein.

I was too young to have heard it when it came out, though I vaguely remember "Help Me" from the radio as a young child. People are mixed on Joni's jazz period but I absolutely love it. That warm '70s LA production, the great playing (especially the late great Jaco Pastorius), the great songwriting. Joni's guitar ties everything together. As I recall she was doing some massive multitracking on her guitar tracks. Her vocals are more restrained and in a lower register than the soaring soprano of her early recordings, and very much fit the material. The writing is absolutely devastating, too, capped by the title track, which has that amazing line: "I know - no one's going to show me everything/We all come and go unknown/Each so deep and superficial/Between the forceps and the stone." Gets me every time. Singer-songwriter music can all too often be introspective and self-indulgent, but this is the best of the genre.
