Okay, so I'm old. I had this movie on VHS and the soundtrack on cassette back in the day. You can only get this music through purchasing the full album. Songs are not sold individually. But, it's worth every penny. If you have fond memories of this soundtrack, don't waver. Plunk your money down and add it your Amazon library or download it now. You won't be disappointed.

A bit disappointed

First of all - the original show on PBS is absolutely fantastic. If you have not seen it, you probably should. 20 plus years after first viewing it, I still love the music. I originally recorded it on my VCR (I know, that was a long time ago) and my pre-teen kids and I wore it out. So I bought a copy (another VCR tape) from PBS and they wore it out too. I had also made a cassette tape for the car and we wore it out too. Let me tell you, that tape kept the kids quiet in the car for countless hours on long trips. So based on all of this, you would expect 5 stars from me. But this CD has two problems. First of all, it won't play in the car. I don't know why but it just displays an error message. I burned a copy to a CD-R and the copy plays fine so I can deal with that. But now I realize that all of the songs from the film are not on the CD. Also, I suspect that some of the ones that are on are on it are different takes than the ones on the film. So I feel let down. Summing up, see the show if you get a chance and watch for a CD with all of the original takes.

I recorded this on VHS way back in 1990 as a preteen and wore down the tape many years ago. It hit me today to do an Amazon search for this amazing soundtrack and there it was. This random, never shown again performance on PBS was truly great in my book and I'm so glad to finally have it in my collection. Now my little girl is going to hop and sing around the living room trying to imitate the high kicks and octaves of Ladysmith Black Mambazo. That was my first introduction to a now lifelong devotion to a remarkable group. I'm so happy to finally get to introduce this soundtrack to my family! And this is by far the best recording of the Lion Sleeps Tonight ever. Disney should've snapped this up and put it on their soundtrack of The Lion King movie.

From this review, maybe a year after posting this, someone with the vhs let me buy their copy and also sent it over with it burned on a dvd. So yay. amazon hooked me up with this one. I'm pleased.

I used to own this years ago, but wore it out. I'm so happy to find this again! These are some of the best Acappella groups in the world, all together. The Persuasions, Rockappella, the Mint Juleps and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Spike Lee had something to do with this concert, not sure what though. You never hear him on any of the tracks. I don't care for the True Image group, never heard of them.

These are memorable recording, the best that each group can do. :)

Loved the performances by Rockapella and True Image. Under the Boardwalk is spectacular! Performances by Take 6 (jazz), the Mint Juleps (all female), Ladysmith Black Mambazo (African traditional roots), and the Persuasions (traditional street corner a cappella) show the breadth of musical possibilities of the human voice.

Music is a great uniter of people, and this CD shows the camaraderie that comes of making music together.

almost historical in some obscure traits

I first saw part of this on late night satelite tv in a hotel room in Central America in the 80's....the only English production on at the hour. I later purchased it and think, despite some poor cinematography...often hand-held camera...the musical content and performances are remarkable...and exposed me to some groups who have now become favorites. I might be one of Spike Lee's best in my uneducated opinion....as a very young director...and some BBC sponsorship.

I first saw this show in 1991. I loved it so much I bought the soundtrack but lost it a while back. I decided to repurchase it and the music is just as good as I remembered it to be. The different styles of a capella are fun to listen to. "Zombie Jamboree" is one of my favorites. A Capella music takes talent and all the artists on this CD are awesome.

I bought this CD for one song, "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" By Ladysmith and Black Mambazo. It wasn't the version I was looking for but it was still pretty good. The rest of the Cd is Ok to listen too but not great. If you like A capella music this will be an OK CD to buy because it has a sampling of several groups to listen too.
