One of The Smiths top 2 CDs

This is certainly one of The Smiths best 2 CDs. In terms of real albums (not compilations), this is probably my #1. It has a lot of rock songs as well as moody/mellow. Many would put The Queen Is Dead at #1, but they were better known what that one came out. One is not really better than the other, but if I had a gun to my head, this is the one I'd choose.

Hatful Of Hollow is an incredible CD too, but really a collection of early singles (or versions of songs) not on any other CD.

Normally, 5-stars -- my favorite Smith's album.
I received the recent version, that Marr remixed when putting together Complete Smiths. Sound is FANTASTIC.
But, warning if you are reading older CD reviews: this does NOT include the single, "How Soon Is Now."

I hadn't realized the history before buying the CD: I always thought "How Soon Is Now" was just a hidden track (i.e., on pressings but not listed on liner notes). But, as others have noted, it was added by record company to US release; band protested, so it was intentionally left off of the liner notes.

So, purists - it's essentially the Brit. release.

I generally hate when the execs step in, let alone bonus tracks, but the US version was the "original" for my virgin ears in '87. That single is AMAZING, and when a friend first spun some smiths lps for me, it's what made me jump from "sounds good" to "you HAVE to lend them to me!".

Still -- a must, must have, if you can't pull off the band aid and just get the Complete box.

The second long-player by The Smiths is a revelation even today. This reviewer lived in Manchester at the time of its release and can fully attest to the record's dead-center portrayal of a tender hooligan's fight to survive the soot of a disused city. The now classic "How Soon is Now?" warbles from its lair with the unforgettable post-clubbing line "You go home and cry and you want to die." Instead of suicide, Morrissey urges the like-minded to moon the queen in the defiant "Nowhere Fast." The lyricist par excellence routinely got bashed and parodied for his persona of mope (rightly so), but "Meat" comes rushing out of the gate with four breathless songs about sadistic headmasters, dodgy carnival rides, a railway rendez-vous that will never happen, and cigarettes intensely inhaled to bring an early death. Anyone trapped a whisper and a nudge from what they desire immediately senses in Morrissey a compatriot, a sensitive soul clutching secret treasures in a thuggish, merciless world. And as one perceptive critic once noted, Johnny Marr is the wind that blows Morrissey's clouds. The guitar work on "Meat" is simply superb. The twining figures and textures, buoyed by Andy Rourke's melodic bass lines, bring the bumps. "Every sensible child" knows what The Smiths mean.

Fine album, certainly not their best, but keep in mind that this remastered vinyl edition does NOT include How Soon Is Now?. If you want the 2011 remastered version of the Smiths' most recognizable song on vinyl, you'll have to buy Hatful of Hollow. It's not like Rhino is hiding this fact, but still, this is disappointing.

If you or anybody you know is diving into The Smiths i strongly recommend Meat is Murder to be the 1st record to hear. It has (in my opinion) the best collection of songs out of their catalog. This one doesn't have How Soon Is Now? on the track list but that's alright! Give it a spin and play it loud.

A stellar album from a bunch of young Brits that played and sang their hearts out with reckless abandon.
There may never be another voice like Steven Morrissey - or another sound so beautiful as these folks combined.

This has remained one of my favorite LPs since it's release. I was 36 then & now I'm....well... I recently purchased the CD with How Soon is Now so I wouldn't have to play that separately from their singles LP. To me this was cutting edge lyrics for its day -talking about sexual & physical abuse at school (The Headmaster Ritual), corporal punishment (Barbarism Begins at Home) & of course that vegan anthem, Meat is Murder. Morrissey's voice is amazing & unique & Johnny Marr's guitar blazes. Morrissey's lyrics nail angst & lonliness - What She Said describes my depressed bookworm teen years perfectly. For me, the only song that sounds like filler is I Want the One I Can't Have -everything else is delicious.

Pretty close to their best

I disagree with those who consider this one of their "middling" albums. Every song on the album is pretty strong. I can do without the title song--"Heifer whines could be human cries...." Tracks 1 through 5, played in succession, are as strong as anything the Smiths ever did and flow really well. "How Soon Is Now" is a great, if overplayed, song. "Nowhere Fast" and "Well I Wonder" are also great songs. Anyways, this album with their last 2 studio albums, "The Queen is Dead," and "Strangeways, Here We Come" cemented the Smiths as one of the greatest bands of their time. Add in their singles collections and they were amazing.
