Editorial Reviews
Soundgarden's first two EPs combined together on one CD, originally released in 1990. Fronted by Chris Cornell, Soundgarden's blend of Classic Rock, Metal and Grunge helped jumpstart a Rock revolution in the early '90s. Alongside Nirvana and Pearl Jam, Soundgarden remain one of the finest bands to emerge from and transcend the influential Grunge scene. 10 tracks including 'Hunted Down', 'Nothing to Say' and 'Swallow My Pride'. Warner.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2009This is a combination of Soundgarden's first two ep's. So first off this album is pure hardcore rock. If you listen to Soundgarden at all, you should check it out. If your one of those casual fans who just like Black Hole Sun and Spoonman, then check out Badmotorfinger or A-Sides, unless you like a more hardcore raw experimental sound. Chris Cornell gives a great performance, and while it's not his best, he really shines on tracks Hunted Down, Tears To Forget, Nothing To Say, and Fopp.
On their first releases they were obviously heavily influenced by Zeppelin, Sabbath, and 70's rock, and still finding their sound. They didn't really settle into their sound until Louder Than Love. You can definitely hear traces of their sound throughout many tracks, but it wasn't until Louder Than Love that they really had their own sound. While Louder Than Love is a lot like Ultramega OK in it's hard, heavy, raw sound, it's a more defined and solid record and you really begin to hear the Soundgarden sound.
The first four songs on Screaming Life are worth the purchase alone. They are some of Soundgarden's best early songs. Hand of God and Fopp are also among my favorites. So if you want to hear pure, heavy rock, check this out. It's very hard to find, but I just ordered it off Amazon and it was in my hands in 3 days. So anyway if you are a pretty big Soundgarden fan, you already know about songs like Hunted Down, Nothing To Say, Hand of God, and you already have this or will eventually have it. But if you are new to Soundgarden, I suggest you pick up Badmotorfinger, then Louder Than Love, then SuperUnknown.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2010fans of the later, more radio-friendly soundgarden might not like this cd, but if youre into "louder than love" then youll probably like this. it took me a little longer to get into than "badmotorfinger" or "louder than love" because at first listen it sounds like a whole lot of noise, but all it took was a couple more plays and now "hunted down" and "nothing to say" are two of my all-time favorite soundgarden songs. the whole cd is pretty dark-sounding and kind of scary at times, probably due to the murky production, but chris cornells voice is better than usual (other than the song "little joe", which i at least hope was meant as a joke because hes yelping like a little kid for almost the entire song) and if youre into noisy music and kind of subpar seattle production like on nirvana's "bleach" then youll love this. listen to it on headphones for the full effect.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2013Then buy this.
Seriously.
If you've gone through Superunknown, Badmotorfinger, and Down on the Upside, get this.
And Ultramega OK.
Because if you're not a huge fan, you won't get it.
But if you love this band, you'll love this CD.
This is (besides Ultramega OK) the best representation of Soundgarden's serious side AND hilarious side.
The only (KINDA) bad part is, take any of their best songs, downgrade the musical and lyrical creativity, and Cornell's voice, and you've got this CD.
But that's not bad. At all.
What you have here is the one-celled amoeba in the evolutionary line of one of the greatest bands in........a VERY long time.
Get it. Have fun.
And most importantly.
ROCK ON.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2011Seattle was in the middle of the genesis of the grunge movement by the late '80's when one of its vanguard bands, Soundgarden, released their debut EP, `Screaming Life' in the fall of 1987. All of the elements of the band's future success are here on this and on the quick follow up `Fopp' released in early `88. The familiar banshee wail of Chris Cornell is already evident as the band combined the DIY punk/hardcore esthetic of the decade with traditional heavy metal elements from Sabbath and Zeppelin. "Hunted Down" could be considered among the very first Soundgarden songs and is only disappointing in its brevity though the elements of doom still permeate. "Nothing to Say" and "Hand of God" (based on an old recording of a preacher from the `50's) are two further highlights from the first EP. `Fopp' is much shorter and contains two covers (Mudhoney and the Ohio Players) and in that sense it is less impactful but taken with `Screaming Life', it is part of a strong compilation. A must have for anyone who is into both Soundgarden and the early Seattle scene - `Screaming Life/Fopp' shows how a band that would command great attention during the `alternative' `90's sounding like within the environs of a burgeoning independent scene that would have tremendous international impact within 3 to 4 short years.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2013I really love Soundgarden's latest CD but I saw this CD on Amazon and decided to give it a try. It is comprised of a couple of early EP's that were released by SubPop and I really love it. if you're an occasional fan of Soundgarden, maybe this isn't for you but I want all the Soundgarden and Chris Cornell Music I can get my hands on. Great Delivery and Packaging to go along with the great appreciation of a young Soundgarden.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2013Needed to replace from a long lost cassette copy. Forgot just how much I enjoyed this disc! If you are an early Soundgarden fan, this should be a must in your collection. Received cd in brand new condition....no scratches, skips or cracked case.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2014Ordered for my son who is a Soundgarden/Chris Cornell fan to the core. He really enjoys hearing the early sounds of the band and comparing how CC's voice has changed over the years.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2017Not Soundgarden's best work for sure. Fopp is a good song, but it's better by the Ohio Players. Love OP's version, so I thought I'd give this one a try because I really dig Soundgarden. Slightly disappointing. Love Soundgarden's other albums though. You'd be better off to go with Superunknown. Just my opinion.

Jack CrabbReviewed in Germany on September 26, 20125.0 out of 5 stars "Superunknown"

Mr. Joel S. GreenhalghReviewed in the United Kingdom on October 8, 20135.0 out of 5 stars Great Early Soudgarden at their best!!
This is a superb record with the legendary song hunted down on, you can certainly tell how Cornells voice has changed and matured on later records but thats no bad thing, this is still an awesome record from one of the best rock bands out their!!

VezioReviewed in Italy on January 28, 20114.0 out of 5 stars Esordi Soundgarden
