Don't blame Beat Happening for inspiring several hundred gratingly twee, musically inept bands in stupid cardigans. Instead, put this on and celebrate the things that made them great. All the qualities that those wannabe disciple bands missed are here in spades: it's mysterious, dangerous, sexy and punk as hell. Possibly the best album K ever put out (and they released a lot of great records!)

This a 5 Star album period. Bonfire is the greatest beach love song since Surfer Girl. Plus one of the greatest last song conclusions to an album ever with Ponytail. Give it a try and maybe you like your candy black.

And a very good one at that. Supposedly (as I've heard) Jamboree is the considered "opus", I rather like this album though. It's a good introduction to the feel and style of Beat Happening it seems to me. One might say 'oh it sounds so crap, terribly low quality, and that man can't sing, and is that supposed to be a rythm section or some monkeys given thick strings and tom toms for christmas?' But. I say no. This is quite unique...and enjoyable to me. Twee pop. Do you like? (Belle and Sebastian fans, perk your ears up) Then do listen to this. Beat Happening is utterly individualistic, and a good time as well. Standout tracks would be: Other Side, Knick Knack, Cast a Shadow, and 'Gravedigging Blues' for the Tom Waits lover in your family. Anyway, give it a chance. You don't have to like it. I do though. I would reccommend this to friends, family, co-workers, colleagues, and thesis paper informers.

3.0 out of 5 stars beat happening's weak spot

Black Candy has been described as Beat Happening's "darker" (and probably only darker orientated subject matter) album. While it can be wise and exciting to move into different territories unfortunetly it didn't quite work for Beat Happening. Probably the better songs are "other side" which has a political overtone to it done into a deceptivly child-like playground affair. "Cast a Shadow" certainly the best song on the record which could have fitted nicely in jamboree (and covered by many bands). "Playhouse" which wouldn't sound out of tune (no pun) in some early morning kids tv show. And lastly "Ponytail" a proto "you turn me on" song which has some sort of twee rock shoegazing feel. Apart from this most of the other songs are a bit mediocre and forgettable. Beat Happening are a great and challenging band with some great songs which are unfortunatly limited here.
