Angel of Light is Einojuhani Rautavaara's seventh symphony. Written in 1994, Angel of Light is a slowly unfolding sonic landscape of misty impressions and elevated language. It has no program, but the music does evoke a serene mood and is very hymn-like. This is one of Rautavaar's most "user-friendly" symphonies. Annuciations (1976-77) employs a large wind orchestra and concertante brass quintet, as well as an organ. The spectrum of sound Rautavaara gets from this combination has to be heard to believed. Rautavaara's music is the shimmer of the aurora borealis. Spooky. Enlightening. --Paul Cook

- Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2008By way of recommendation, this CD is my first exposure to this contemporary Finnish composer. While it's perhaps too easy to pigeonhole Rautavaara's Symphony No. 7 "Angel of Light" into that formless invented genre dubbed "new age", I will say that it provides abundantly more musical substance than anything I've heard by the likes of Philip Glass. Not only does this four-movement work exude a shimmering beauty and drama evocative of far northern latitudes, but also a sense of "universal introspection" by way of a colorful and mostly lyrical orchestral display. I'm particularly enamored of its occasional outpourings from the string basses effectively interspersed with the light emanating from the higher strings and winds. It was indeed Sibelius who made effective (and affecting) use of this melding of dark and light. A very fine solo violin is also a highlight. I can certainly understand this work's relative popularity among fans of both classical and contemporary music and believe it to be justified, if only because I feel a compulsion to occasionally revisit this to delve deeper into its beautiful mysteries.
Annunciations offers a similar amorphous melding of timbres effectively offset by the unique sounds of the organ; its more intimate scale allows for clearer textures and more explicit musical nuances. The playing is exquisite; the music is alternatingly expressive and introverted with the organ seemingly in a state of self-examination. This work is probably less "egalitarian" in its appeal than Angel of Light, but still an intriguing listen nonetheless.
I should also mention that my copy of the CD, purchased used from an Amazon seller, was absolutely lacking notes of any kind -- the folding cover was blank inside.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2011During the last 10 years, Rautavaara's symphony no. 7, subtitled "Angel of light", has become, in Leif Segerstam's interpretation, a perennial favourite with me. The orchestration of this symphony is so dense that I have the feeling that each time I listen to it, I find something new in it -- a shade of timbre here, an orchestral detail there, an emphasis on a certain group of instruments in another place. This is music that seems to have an oddly protean quality. At the same time, it is mystical without being New-Agey; majestic without being pompous; definitely modern without being inaccessible; and, finally, melodic without being naive or simplistic.
Other reviewers here have remarked on the overwhelming, almost physical quality of this music. I have to admit that listening to Rautavaara's "Angel of light" symphony has given me the nearest equivalent of what might be called a mystical (or near-mystical) experience. A practical agnostic (although I try to cultivate an open mind), I can now appreciate, at least in artistic terms, what would it feel like to have an experience of this kind -- in this case, an angelic vision. For Rautavaara, angels are not simply the harbingers of good and light as they are so often described in classical (and popular) art -- they also have their dark, elemental and terrifying side, represented in the music by dissonant figures and contrasting elements. Rautavaara himself likes to quote the German poet Rainer Maria Rilke, who in one of his poems writes something like every angel being terrifying. And that is exactly the image painted by the music here: sublime, overwhelming, yes, even terrifying.
The other piece on this CD, "Annunciations", a concerto for organ and brass instruments, continues philosophically in a similar vein, although the musical language leans even more towards the dissonant and the contrastive. However, usually I stop listening to this CD here, because I find the symphony to be such an emotionally intense experience that I do not feel the need to listen to any other music after it.
I have the feeling that Segerstam captures the essence of the symphony so well that up to now I have not even considered acquiring another CD version, as much as I love this symphony. I really should give a listen to the other versions of this symphony available on disc, just to see how they compare with Segerstam's account.
Some commentators have remarked on the supposed "lack of substance" of Rautavaara's music. But to me and some other listeners (see the other reviews on this page) this music speaks quite differently. To me, Rautavaara's music (on this disc and several others as well) *is* the substance; while listening to it, I feel like I am bathed in substance!
Recommended without reservations to anyone interested in the music of our times, and beyond.

Stefan GreenmantleReviewed in the United Kingdom on June 10, 20234.0 out of 5 stars Grandiose yet beautiful and wholesome.
These masterpieces from the gorgeous symphonic orchestration of Mr Rautavaara offer a pleasant journey through not too dissonant pastures.
I feel that despite the genius of the contents, the 'modern' CD should still aim for one hour of music. On that basis lose one star!

ニゴチュウ (Nigochu)Reviewed in Japan on January 1, 20055.0 out of 5 stars
